Musicians that have Excelled at Both Guitar & Bass

I know there are many that are at least somewhat proficient at both,...but who, past/present is a master of both?

Howdy,

Paul McCartney's considered to be pretty good on Acoustic guitar by most..and we all know about his prowess on Bass.

Master is a subjective term.

The following come to mind

Todd Rundgren
Sting
Paul McCartney
John Fogerty
Tom Petty
Willie Nelson
Paul Simon
Mike Rutherford
Geddy Lee
John Paul Jones
Jimmy Page

Ron Wood

Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes does a lot of the bass work in the studio

By 'master', I mean someone who has made a universally recognized and unique contribution to the playing of the instrument.

I'm thinking it may be almost impossible to master both, considering the time needed to devote to one of the 2.

But I'm sure some of those mentioned are close, if not there.....

I thought I recalled REM switching instruments back and forth on the Unplugged show.

Me
I am considered extremely below average on both Guitar and Bass. I've been called very sucky on drums.

Prince.
We all know he's quite handy on a Hohner tele, but I also recall an interview with his bass player where he said that Prince's bass playing was better than his own.

Bassist Tim Drummond (CS&N, Neil Young, James Brown, Clapton, Miles Davis, BB King, Lonnie Mack, JJ Cale, Dylan, Ry Cooder, etc...) is great on bass but he is also incredible on 6 string guitar too. We jammed a few times and I was floored by how good he was on guitar - MUCH better than I'll ever be...

Ronnie Wood

I have bootleg Jeff Beck Group shows from 67-69 and the bass is phenomenal - busy but phenomenal.

Keith was/is not a fan of Ronnie's bass playing - thought he sounded to much like a guitarist playing bass.

David Gilmour?

I've read it somewhere that he used to play most the bass parts on PF albums.

It stands to reason when you watch more recent Roger Waters DVD's; he usually hands the difficult bass parts over to someone else.
