I think it's a form of mental laziness and agree with the Cooler King about language- there's no correct "way" only the evolution of how we talk to each other. However, if we don't do something to protest against this linguistic apathy (such as Kojak has by starting this thread) the drones will deaden language irrepairably, like it or not.

I was watching American Chopper this one time... and like, Pauly Senior was talking... and he was like; "Ahhh" every half sentence... He just kept sayin' "Ahhh" like over and over again... It was funny for like 30 seconds or so man, but then he just kept right on sayin' it like forever, man... and it was just like, absurd by that point... and then... like; Pauly Jr. came on and like, he started sayin' it too, man... and I was like, Wow, man... the apple don't fall like, very far from the tree, does it? Ya' know what I mean, Man? I was like, freakin' out, ya know?

I could preach but I'll just leave it to this video that does it with humor.

My wife's youngest sister (I think she was twenty one or two at the time) used to be TERRIBLE with the "like" thing. I couldn't even have a conversation with her.
One day at our house, she called into a radio station to win concert tickets, but for the contest, you didn't know what you had to do to win until you called in. She got through, and her task, was to talk for two minutes, without saying "like". Not have a conversation, just talk. By herself. When we heard that, the rest of us were dying laughing, it was almost like somebody set her up. She did it, and I couldn't believe it. I was floored. I thought for sure there was no way in hell she'd get twenty seconds, let alone two minutes. She hung up the phone and immediately said something like- "Like, oh my GAWD, that was like, the hardest thing I've EVER done!"

Another thing that annoys me is people who say "hey" instead of "helllo". I don't like being heyed.

As much as we fear it, there's nothing wrong with a thoughtful pause. It beats rambling, cluttered nonsense any time.

I laugh at my teenage son using this as frequently as he does. It's so 1960's hippie jargon. Bit like the muso's round here calling everyone 'man'. It's just so like old fashioned.
But the recent trend amongst the older generation here which really drives me crazy is their use of the word 'look'. It seems like every news reporter and politician uses this word to try to force home whatever point they're trying to make. As in :- Reporter "Look, I'm standing here outside Parliament House with the Prime Minister. Mr Key, tell me about this new policy your government is adopting" John Key "Look, we're taking this policy forward because blah blah blah.........." The use of 'look' is just so unnecessary in this context but they all seem to be doing it. Give me a gun and I'll like shoot the lot of them...................
