Great Ray Charles Story

There's a great story on the Steel Guitar Forum about Ray Charles by a former drummer of his. If you're interested:

That's a great story. I watched "Ray" with some of my classes a couple of weeks ago and I think they started to get some appreciation for just how HUGE of a man he was, and how complex he was too.

"From day one, drummers learn that tempo is their responsibility. All musicians are expected to play with good rhythm, but an experienced drummer's inner clock has been honed to a fine degree of precision, and instead of worrying about melody and harmony, his game is all about the time-keeping - every millisecond of fast to slow."

Ah--if only all drummers were so accepting of the wisdom above...

Great story, thanks as well for providing the link. Since the movie came out I have been getting re-aquainted with his music. Ray Charles was the real deal.

RC was on the Tonight Show once in the 70's,and was being backed up by the show's band.He started the deadly-slow "Drown In My Own Tears" and when the drums came in,he cocked his head toward Ed Shaunessy and told him,"Slow down, baby." He didn't care if he was on TV,he wasn't gonna sing the song a hair faster than it was supposed to go.

I was floored...national TV...Ed Shaunessy!

My recollection had been that Ray said something like "stay with me drummer"...but that was a looooong time ago and my detailed memory is shrt. I've told that story a million times (now I'll use the correct quote..LOL)

Thanks for the anecdote!
Fred
