Guitar Stands
I'm on the lookout for a new Guitar Stand. I would like to try and find one that folds up (or comes apart) small enough to fit in my gig bag. Any suggestions/recommendations?

I've seen the Ultimate folding stand for $20 and the Fender folding stand for $13. The Fender is definately small enough to fit in a gig bag and it comes with it's own little carrying bag.

You may want to look at what Hamilton has to offer.

Don't Skimp
on one of those stands with the tubular cradles on the bottom and a "U" shaped yoke that supports the neck. I got away with using one of them for years until some clod from another band in too much of a hurry bumped into my axe. The result was a crack eminating from one of the neck pocket screws and a chip out of the guitar finish. All of a sudden the $24.00 whole dollars for an Ultimate stand didn't seem too much.
So- big vote for Ultimate stand (very sturdy, folds up nicely and compact) also the Hamilton posted above (kb38 style) looks like the same kind of configuration- except in chromed metal-the Ultimate is finished in black). I don't have any experience with the Fender folder. My .02 Brian

If You're Serious
to the best of my knowledge it's surgical tubing, so, probably a surgical supply place? But before you invest in that, check out an ultimate stand. Yer guitar will thank you.

I have three guitar stands (the Ultimate tripod one, and two generic Guitar Center specials with the neck support piece...one double one single.)
The Ultimate is better in every possible way. The other stands' neck supports seem to make them less stable, increase the chances of smashing your guitar into the wall, and take up quite a bit more room. I have one of the Ultimate amp stands as well. I've heard that they can be a bit too weak for larger amps, but for the Vibro Champ and my Blues Jr before it, it's been perfect. It also has a built in mic boom adapter which saves even more space in my cramped townhouse. YMMV. |

I have heard that a guitar finished in nitro laquer will react with the surgical rubber used on some stands & damage the finish. Don't know how true this is but it's something to consider I suppose.

"Apex" makes these neat little A-frame type stands that are only $10 (Canadian) here. I own 4 of them. They are tiny, especially when folded up. I love them because they don't take up much room and are great for taking to shows.
They look like this, but they are less then half the price: http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--ULTGS50 |

I use the Ultimate stands that have the guitar hanging from the headstock. They fold up nicely, and they are the only stand I've ever used that wasn't a CORD MAGNET.
The low-to-the-ground A-frame types are stable, but they suck cords so bad you need 2 people to get you untangled. And when there isn't a guitar on them, they're good for tripping over and breaking your neck with on a dark stage. |

I'm a big fan of the little cheap Fender stands. They work great, and fold up into a very small bundle. And they're sturdy enough for my P-Bass. My brother likes them so much, he owns three!
Cheers, Tim

Thanks Guys
The Hamilton or Fender ones seem to fit the Bill. I have found a supplier/stockist of the Fender ones in the UK. Can't find any stockist of the Hamilton though....
Thanks for all your help and suggestions - much appreciated.

Replacement tubing
What I've found is tubing used for airhoses. You can find it at almost any large hardware store, comes in several sizes and snazzy colors. They will cut you any length you want and it's pretty inexpensive. Will outlive you, your guitar, the guitar stand, and not harm the guitar. I've got a nifty orange one on mine.

I like the Ultimate stand. It fits in my gigbag, too. Also, they are a local (to me) American company who make great products. I was part of the focus group of local musicians who helped with the design for the Genisis stands. These are people who listen to musicians and care about their products. Please support them.
