I used to like thin and floppy picks now I like thick and hard
I have recently changed my preference for the type of pick I use, For years I played with Dunlop nylon .73 picks but now unexpectedly I find I prefer a really hard stiff pick, they seem to really add attack to my tele's sound and really make solo's cut through. Anyone else suddenly changed something after years of doing things a certain way.

Same exact thing happened to me lately. I had been using the pale grey Dunlops (I suck at remembering numbers) and after trying one of those small and super thick jazz picks for a while, I switched the the black Dunlops and never looked back. The thin ones make me feel less in control of my sound somehow.

Different picks for different licks as the saying goes.

I used to really like the thinish grey nylon picks too, now I really can't stand thin picks... not enough control of picking dynamics, my first attempt at something thicker was the green regular shape tortex picks, forget the exact thickness... then after watching Danny Gatton talk about jazz picks being good for playing with pick/fingers I tried a bag of Jazz III Ultex... 2.0mm I think... LOVE THEM! they don't get in the way, and seem to have no flex at all... weird, I know young me would have hated Jazz IIIs lol

I use a few different pics. I like thinner for playing stuff like NOFX and Misfits. I like the thicker picks for playing a little slower/fuller stuff like folk and blues. I like the red and the orange ones that have the alligators [or maybe turtles?] on them. And I like the skinny white ones that Dunlop makes. I don't really know brands or sizes, but I recognize them when I see them.

I believe the Dunlop floppy white ones are 0.37 thickness, and the red tortex ones are .51 or something. I pretty much play exclusively with those. Still learning, so playing accoustic with the 0.37 really makes mistakes less noticeable. Sommmmmetimes I play with a 0.73 if I'm practicing scales or practicing a solo on the tele.

I been playin Dunlop Ultex Sharps for a while now, very thick ans stiff with a point, But I kind like the "fwap" from a medium Fender pick. harder to play fast but nice for recording, strumming, acoustic.

I switched to jazz III's from the large tortex dunlops. When I switch back to the larger dunlops, it feels like I'm playing with a tea saucer.
Let me add that the jazz III's are small enough to get a lot of thumb and just enough pick to get the clucking muted sound easily. Last edited by hwy145; March 5th, 2012 at 06:14 PM. |

I used to use and really like the sound of the orange Torres .60 which are stupidly thin, like strumming picks for most. But then I decided they wore really quickly and used a 1.00 and it gave me a bit more speed to my playing...and is still floppy eough. Thick picks are a bit too cumbersome personally

Picks are WAY more important for your tone and playing than people give them credit for.
I have allways liked my picks small, pointy and hard (though not TOO hard). I have been using the Dunlop jazz picks and all sorts of similar ones. Never could find quite the one though. Untill recently when a friend of mine in the states sent me some PRO PLECS. Man they are awesome. I even created a thread about it here to recommend them, but unfortunately it was moved to this "bad dog cafe"-section where people discuss their cat's skin diseases and whatnot, so it kind of just disappeared there. Anyway here is that thread They really DO make a huge difference. |
