Two strikingly different versions:

I didn't watch SNL.
I usually don't any more. So I forgot even though I meant to last week. I did catch him on an episode of American Pickers though. He made a deal to acquire a stuffed elephant head. That was pretty cool.

Not bad at all. Not what I was expecting, for sure. And then the second clip, again, not what I was expecting...

I thought both performances were great. Cool that he had two different bands: women for the first song, men for the second, but playing the same instruments. I noticed my son was finding White Stipes stuff online Sunday afternoon, after seeing him on SNL the nigh before.
Leave it to Jack White not only to play through an old tube PA head, but to go out and find three of the exact same model. Anybody recognise them? They don't look like Bogens. Nice to see a Tele sitting on stage, even if nobody played it.

I greatly admire Jack White because he has managed to find a way to be 1) commercially successful, 2) critically successful, and most importantly: 3) personally successful. It is pretty clear that he is doing EXACTLY what he wants to do, with no compromises.
And in today's music business, it takes a very special talent and personality to do that. Much respect for Mr. White. Thanks for posting.

I watched it and liked it.
I still always wonder why some musicians achieve commercial success while other great ones don't.

He never claimed to be anything more than a garage musician. Self-promotion is an exceedingly important talent to have and need not be derided, in my opinion.

Were there other bands here that were more talented ?
At the beginning yes. But w/ De Stijl and White Blood Cells he wrote far better songs than any other local bands. Were there other bands/artists that had a better focus & ambition ? No one even close. Loved the first song on SNL - songs like that are the reason I've always liked him. Second song is a Jack screamer - not that spectacular.

Hah. I haven't seen the episode yet, it's on the dvr..
But I heard that first song on the radio this morning, and I thought it was a remake of son of a preacher man at first. Those keyboard bits are close. |
