Saw the performance and I really liked it. I enjoy watching Jack White a hell of a lot more than Jack Black.

I don't care if it's two chords. If it works, it works.

I'll take sincerity and tone over skill and complexity any day.

The 60's = Iron Butterfly

The 70's = Supertramp

Two cases where bands somehow slipped under the "higher standards" when you were younger...

I happen to think Jack White is very relevant. I don't like everything he does. I don't like most of what he does. But I have a lot of respect for him. Just my opinion.

But in response to your comment, I would point out that The Stones, Jeff Beck, Loretta Lynn, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Page are among those would disagree with you about him. Some names from when you were younger.

If you haven't seen It Might Get Loud, a documentary about Jack, Page and The Edge... And since this is a Tele forum... Here's the very beginning:

Yes I saw the movie, hence my opinion of him. As for the collaberations you mentioned, they were probably "set up" by publicists for the $$$. I wasn't a Butterfly or a Supertramp fan either. Firmly in the Hendrix camp. Thats my reference point,,,,Son.

Like JLV said,,," all you need is tone, taste and attitude." White's got all three.

Whoops! I've been around long enough to learn that there's no arguing with cynics and conspiracy theorists.

Well it seems where you're going wrong is trying to compare two very different musicians. Jack White isn't a virtuoso and doesn't try to be. He's a songwriter primarily, not a guitarist.

Honestly I enjoy his approach a lot more than most of the guys around now doing the Hendrix thing. It's stale.

Who is Jack White? Is he like...Jack Black's brother or something?

I was flippin' through the channels Saturday night, and came across him playing...

...I had to turn if off. :barf:

The last thing I'd ever try to do is make someone like something - you know, if ya give them enough examples of whatever's brilliance they'll come around.

People like what they like.

But, I know plenty of guys from 45-65 who are stuck back there.

It is true most people fall off trying new music sometimes in their twenties but musicians should be different. The average musician has wider-ranging ears than a civilian.

They should be on the hunt longer too.

I'm constantly surprised at what horse crap gets big (Kings of Leon ?!) and what gets forgotten/barely noticed (Sloan, NRBQ).

But - I'm always searching. Partly because Zeppelin and other artists that don't exist anymore only left a finite amount of stuff and I can't listen to the same thing over and over.

Jack came off kinda flaky in It Might Get Loud, I'll give ya that. I thought that from the moment I saw it.

I don't think everyone has to like the guy, but I thought he was the best thing about "It Might Get Loud" and I love Jimmy Page.

This thread reminds me of something someone on another gear forum posted (maybe the Gear Page). Someone commented that they always hated Jack White until they saw him play slide. The other person commented that that's typical - the guy sings great , writes great tunes, produces other artists, and generally has his head screwed on pretty straight as far as his career, yet the typical internet guitar geek dismissed all of that until they saw him play some slide. It was only then that he got any kind of respect. Like maybe if he played some lightning fast country licks he'd be deemed respectable. I think we're dealing with a bit of that type of thinking in this thread.

For me, I don't even think of him in terms of guitar playing ability - honestly I can think of a million guys "better" than him. But I like the guy's attitude as an artist, I like his songs, I love his voice (pretty versatile actually, with a good range and an instantly recognizable style). Plus he has a solid vision and focus as an artist. And enough attitude to pull it all off (what some might call "being full of himself.") I think those are good things.

By the way, when you say "who's Jack White" and you have Google at your disposal, you sound like a fuggin dinosaur.

I don't know enough about Jack to understand the "he's full of himself" comments.

When I have seen him he's quiet, almost shy, eclectic and a bit odd. He smiles. He waves.

Is he a big jerk in interviews? When is he any more full of himself than any other rock star?

I honestly don't get it.

I admire the heck out of Jack White. I loved the White Stripes and Raconteurs. The dead weather was a little too different for me, but not bad.

His first song, with the way the organ was up in the mix, kinda reminded me of the Small Faces, kinda like Toy Soldier. Very cool. The second song rocked pretty hard. The drummer was a blast.

Very enjoyable!

I don't mind that some folks don't care for him either. It takes all kinds.

Jack White was very good in It Might Get Loud, but Page shone in it the most.

Of course, Page is my guitar hero, so I WOULD see it that way.

When I watched that movie all I could think of everytime they showed Jack White was the movie Deep Blues. Like been there done that. If White spent more time gushing over the likes of guys like Lonnie Pitchford I'd have an easier time stomaching him.

As it is, White is good only at hyping himself.

He's actually really versed in old blues and is a big fan of (among others) Blind Willie McTell. He's sung his praises plenty.

Now that is one damned good song.

I'm 61 and stuck in all kinds of stuff but strangely pull myself outta the rut once in awhile and listen to these 'new guys' = somebody that didn't start recording in 1966. I'll be darned, some of them are pretty good and even more strangely, they remind me of what it was like to be young and digging new music. I should devote a year to listening to nothing but new stuff...but I probably won't.

OK, now I'll quit and go research that Facebook broom thingee.

You get it or you don't... no, no one's 'kidding' you. Some of us DO get it.

I have no idea what all this 'full of himself' talk is about... maybe he is, I'm not aware of any evidence though.
