Sonny Landreth...Grant Street
I was fortunate enough to see Sonny a couple of years ago with John Hiatt, and as much as I enjoyed his recorded work, seeing him do it live was a night I'll never forget. Sooo...
...when I heard he had a live CD released, I picked it up immediately...and this is the most amazing slide playing i've ever heard by anyone. Just Sonny and a very capable rhythm section, along with a very appreciative audience. This one hasn't been out of my CD player since I got it...if you dig slide guitar in any way, shape or form, you MUST hear this!!!! This cat has to be from another planet, 'cause he's doing things I've never heard anyone else do on a guitar!!!

Sonny is a great player. I've seen him a couple of times from maybe twenty feet away. He is one of those guys like Junior Brown or Albert King...just so amazingly different that you don't even attempt it at home. They are from some other planet! They do/did make for a great evening's entertainment, however.

Met him once....
A couple years back, I got to talk to Sonny for a few minutes. I asked him, "Would you consider doing an instructional video, cause it's damn near impossible to figure out how you do what you do."
He chuckled a bit, and said he had been approached about it, and would like to do one, but hadn't worked out anything definite yet. I'm still crossing my fingers hoping it will happen, but in the meantime, I just try and stand as close as possible whenever I go see him play. And yes, Grant Street is a fantastic disc. Later...

Sonny has been a featured artist on United Airlines this month. 4 tunes from Grant Street. I've been on the road the last couple of weeks and United is my brand so twice a week I get to hear those 4 songs. Now if they could lose the Deeana Carter crap that comes after him ...
Landreth is just a wonder! I've been able to catch him a few times. 1 was his first tour as a 'Goner'. That was in the mid 80's/early 90's. He must have been all of 16 at the time. A very capable 16. Hiatt was lucky! Saw him on the John Hiatt & The Goner's tour from a couple of years ago and he just smoked. I have to go get a copy of Grant Street. |
