Ever been starstruck ?
Just watched a video of people on the Oscars' red carpet yesterday being asked if they've ever been starstruck meeting one of their heroes. Kinda made me wonder about us, guitar/music geeks. Have you guys ever met a hero of yours and felt like a 13 years old girl meeting Justin Beiber, well, maybe that's a bad analogy...
I went see Pete Anderson play the other day and he extended out his hand and introduced himself to me, shortly before going on stage. It went a little like this : Pete "Hi, I'm Pete" Me: "I know. I'm a huge fan" How about you guys ?

I was once downtown with my camera when I spotted a local hero, Kim Mitchell of the Canadian band, Max Webster. He went on to have a pretty strong solo career but at that time he was in the studio finishing what turned out to be the last album Max Webster did. He was with his lyricist and invited me to join them at a patio where they were headed for a drink. I was young and starstruck alright. I basically just got a picture and sat there with not a thing to say.

He was super nice no ego just a regular guy much like he was on TV super nice and polite. I couldnt stop looking at him for awhile cause to me he was a true star.

I was waiting for a cab at an airport and I heard a couple carrying on laughing sounding like they were enjoying each other company. I turned in the direction of the laughter and I saw these two walking in my direction. One was my childhood and musical hero with his lovely bride but I didn't want to bother them. So I just smiled and nodded a hello which the both graciously returned as they walked by. It was enough for me.

I talked to Bill Kirchen at a music festival after a set for a second and that didn't bother me in the least. He couldn't have bee nicer. But, when I met CJ Cherryh, one of my favorite SF writers ever, I stammered and stuttered like an idiot. She was pretty cool about it and signed a book for me anyhow. My daughter was there and she stil laughs about it.

I was playing an old Gibson LP in NJAMS years ago when they were still in DT Vancouver, shootin' the ship with Rob. In walks Richard Gere. Asks if I'm going to buy the LP, I say no. He tries it out, guys pretty good. I'm watching him for ten minutes before I realize I'm standing RIGHT beside Cindy Crawford (big sunglasses, scarf, floppy hat).

I have to work with the occasional celebrity at my day job, and I try to make a point not to get star-struck or fawn over people. The only time I was really nervous was when I did a session with Ken Nordine. Fortunately he was a very gracious guy and put me at ease immediately.

Yep- A few times...
Meeting Sinead O'Connor after her show during the Universal Mother tour, Ricky The Dragon Steamboat in 1983 or so. Redd Volkaert, Cindy Cashdollar, Bill Kirchen, Stephen Ulrich, Robert Gordon, Danny Gatton (didn't get to meet him though), John Oates. I was 11 or 12 when Madonna came out, finally got to see her live a couple years ago. No, i am not gay, and have a soft spot for her, as well as DonkeyKong Jr., Turbo from ""breakin," Sho Kugsogi, and Powell Peralta. Back to the Madonna show- We had nosebleed seats, had to drive 10 hours there AND back same night. At the ticket booth they switched us to awesome seats. I in fact did scream like a girl. Then she came onstage, and I screamed like a girl for another couple hours. Probably the only time I did scream like a girl, except when I was 12 playing PacMan in a bar when an older guy sucker punched me in the nose. Maybe "Holiday" was playing in the background.....

Yep. Met George Lynch at a small concert he did with the original lineup of Dokken in Hollywood back in the 90's. I got there early and they were still setting up. I was standing there watching, and George walked up and stood next to me. We talked for about 10 minutes...super down to earth guy.

I've met a lot of famous folks but the most star-struck I've been was talking to Jerry Scheff !
He was getting hassled by a bartender in a bar I was at and I came to his rescue and said "Do you know who this guy is ? How good he is, who he's played with ? He said relax it's fine and I think it was all the artists he's worked with that came rushing into my head right then that left me a little speechless for a minute. Very nice guy. And across the room was T-Bone Burnett whom I wasn't so interested in meeting. They were in town as the band w/ Mickey Curry on drums backing up Sam Phillips. One of the best trio's I've ever seen. Three masters.

I met Ricky too. He used to go to the same burger stand in Hollywood that I did, the Sunset Grill. Nicest guy you'd ever meet. |

I've met a ton of really incredible musicians over the past ten years, and it's primarily due to the cool vibe of the music festivals I attend on the Suwanee River. The artists feel comfortable wandering the grounds, and if they don't, they generally still do meet'n'greets at the CD table after their set. Over the years I've somehow leaned not to act like a star struck eedjit
WAY back in the day, I ran with a picking pal, we'd hang at each others' gigs and such. This was in NE Ohio... one summer day, he had an errand to run: his brother did some legal work for the local shed [Blossom Music Center], and they needed someone to pull together the guest list for that night's headliner, Joe Walsh. Considered a hometown hero due to his stint playing Ohio bars during his Kent State University days, he had a long list looking to get comped in. My pal Amos did the needed footwork, I did the driving, and we met Joe backstage in the late afternoon to get the sign-off. So introductions were made, and I could BARELY stammer out "Nice to meet you, Joe" while I'm thinking HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP THAT'S JOE F%CK&NG WALSH!!! Joe remains at the very top of my fave guitarist list. Massive fail on my end; oh well... |
