I tolerate the ads on TV (barely). When a TV ad can install malware on my TV set is when I'll start investigating ad blocking tech for my TV.

I use ad blocking on my PC to protect it from drive by malware.

I've been looking for an ad for adblocker so I can order it, but so far I haven't seen one.

Bandwidth isn't free. Servers aren't free. Peoples' time isn't free.

It seems pretty childish to block ads, as if you're entitled to all of this without the slightest inconvenience.

Sure, this is an oppinion too.

But I never said I was not willing to pay.
Actually, I have never been asked if I was willing to pay at all, and if yes, how much would that be. If they asked, I would be in a position to make a decision whether I want or not to pay, or pay this or that much for the specific content.

Only it was way easier to them to charge the advertisers, and penetrate 80% my screen's surface with ads, mostly about products and services I never have, I am not and I never will be consuming.

And the slightest inconvenience is a harsh understatement.
As George put it:

You remember what the net looked like in '96?
That's how it still looks on my screen. White background, black letters, blue links. I presume yours differ.

No worries. We all have different needs.

The page I'm currently looking at and typing on has approximately 1% advertising. And that's being generous.

Lucky you!
Don't even think of installing Adblock-plus!

When I first joined here, there were only ads on the home page...now...everywhere...even imbedded in a thread.

Having said that, I'd note that ads also pay for a heck of a lot of content on the Internot, including the TDPRI, just like they pay for TV shows and newspapers and magazines. If there were no ads, we'd have to pay a hell of a lot more for all this stuff!
to be fair - Adblock said almost exactly the same thing and encourages users to NOT block all ads without further consideration.

well, the ad companies have taken advantage of every opportunity to advertise at me (think on-line, product-placement on film and TV, etc...) for my whole 58 years of life. This is the first time in my life that I can remember ever having a choice whether or not I want to see the ads.

it seems like I should have just as much right and opportunity to choose NOT see those ads.

If the internet becomes so costly that it is no longer viable for commercial enterprises, then they will follow 'the law of the free market' and withdraw from the internet, and find their business elsewhere.

Do you really expect that I should feel guilty for looking at the internet and NOT supporting commercial advertisers? You're joking, right?

this site and many others exist because of advertising income ... i like watching television, and i can deal with commercials as a necessary evil ...IMO, free content with ads is better than content without advertising with added subscription fees ...

My issue isn't with advertising in general, it's with certain types of ads I've encountered online. Some of them are extremely irritating, doing things like flashing bright colours nonstop, playing loud obnoxious sounds that often can't be disabled without muting my computer.

I use AdBlockPlus because I'm sick of putting up with those types of ads. If I only had to put up with simple banner ads, etc, such as those used by the TDPRI, I'd quite happily ditch the adblocker.

With Adblock you can whitelist sites you frequent, I often do.

I'll even click on ads to help pay for the b/w I use.

Adblock Plus will actually prevent those "Your video will begin in 10 seconds" ads from showing up on YouTube? If so, I may have to get me some of that.

I said it in a tongue-in-cheek manner, but the comment was completely sincere.

On the odd chance that the "Mr. Funk" thing was misinterpreted, it was an allusion to the great respect that David Wills--the "It's still real to me, damn it" guy--has for Terry Funk.

Yes it will. Thus why I have never seen one of them.

That's only true if you're not logged in. If you're a TDPRI member and logged in, you'll never see an ad in a thread.

+1

If you're still seeing ads in threads while logged in, something is wrong on your end!

So the people who put the time and money into operating this forum should not have any advertising income? Perhaps you'd like to pay $100 a year to be a member here.
