The thing is,when you are young you believe yourself immortal.Us oldies forget that. In my distant youth I could easily have died many times doing stupid pointless actions, but I lived to tell the stories.

It's very difficult to judge quality of life by the years lived, some people pack it all in during a short life, other drone on into the twilight not having experienced much at all.

Life,it's a flip of the coin.

When I say the headline in The Mirror my initial thoughts were "WTF"!
You see, we are avid couchsurfers ourselves and have also hosted hundreds of other couchsurfers over the years (please see http://www.couchsurfing.com).

Then I read on and I understood

Yeah, parents have a lifetime job.We have to let them go and find out things for themselves and we all hope that experience kicks in before luck runs out,but hope is all we have.

I wonder if the deceased guy's parents place any of the blame on their "rocket surgeon" son?
Dumb stuff has been gettin' people killed since time immemorial.
I usually only got wounded.
It took me 50 years to wise up, I might hit 60, if I'm careful!

Yeah, he made a decision to do something that could get him killed, and it did. But he's far from alone. People skydive, people free climb, people race motorcycles. People dive and surf where big sharks live, people bungee jump, and base jump. Personally, I like to hike and backpack at high altitudes, way out in the backcountry where cell phones don't work. If anybody gets injured, somebody is gonna have to get them to someplace a helicopter can land, then go get one. There's bears there, and lots of other things. I take my kids along too. They love it.

My point is, you can be killed a whole lotta ways. The kid in question surely did something that to us older and more experienced folks looks exceedingly dumb, but to him it was just fun. I'm pretty sure that statistically speaking, many, many more people have been killed participating in the activities I've listed above. Activities many folks these days find commonplace, or at the very least not worthy of a Darwin Award.

At least he died having fun. Even as an adult with kids and a wife to think about, I'd much rather die young and having fun than live a totally safe and totally smart life so I can die old and decrepit, not knowing their names, or even able to wipe my own backside. Dying young sounds like a dream come true compared to that. Of course the real dream is to have all the fun, and still live to a nice old age, but the two ideas don't often work together.

I partially agree, Skub. I think it's also when you're young, you don't think things all the way through. As well, when you're young, you are more optimistic when weighing the risk and reward.

I know when I was that age, there were times when my friends and I should have thought things through a bit more carefully. We didn't become Darwin nominees by luck. (well, that and the Darwin awards weren't around back then)

Dumb. But I used to free climb, so I can't point fingers.

They probably did it 100s of times before something went wrong. When it's your time, it's your time.

I can't believe some people are actually defending the guy's decision to do this!
Sure there are many ways to get you killed, driving a car being one of them, but what he did was plain stupid! The fact that they might have done it hundreds of times before does not change this.

+1 where is the consideration for the people in your lives that are deeply affected by your bad decisions ...thrill seeking is well and good if your prepared for any and all outcomes...these kids were prepared to die young
