About age five, fell and hit my chin and nearly bit my tongue off. Bled like a mofo. Stitches on my tongue applied while I was awake but numbed with lidocaine. Tasty. Felt like a tarantula sitting on my tongue for about two weeks, an eternity at age five. Good times.

I broke my face when I was 12. I was playing Little League and batting against one of the fastest pitcher you would ever see at that age. He got me right in the face. Knocked me out cold, but I got up after a few seconds and took a couple steps towards 1st base and then passed out again. I don't remember a thing.
Shattered the orbital of my eye and a couple other breaks on my cheek bone. My face swelled like a balloon. After several days the swelling finally came down and my face was caved in. 3 titanium plates and 12 screws later the doctors made my face beautiful again. |

I broke the tip of my femur off into my knee and had to have surgery to reattach it back in November. No good story how, just too many lesser injuries over the years caught up with me and my warrantee expired I guess.

I dislocated my right shoulder 5 times before I finally had the surgery (modified Putti-Platt procedure). Best one was WAAY up north in Canada, 2 days' drive from civilization. Popped it back in myself 3 times out of 5 (including that time), but after the last time in Japan, where the ER doc had some trouble getting it back in, I had enough. I'm very glad I had the surgery; though I've lost about 30 degrees of external rotation, I can still play basketball (as well as I ever did, anyway).

Here is the epilogue of my broken face injury post from earlier:
A few weeks after they reconstructed the left side of my face, I was at an Iowa Hawkeye football game. I had a front row seat in one of the endzones. Herky (the mascot) came by so I got his autograph, we were both standing on the grass right in the back of the endzone. Turns out there was a deep pass play in the back of the endzone. Neither of us saw it coming and an Iowa and Ohio State player each right right into me and Herky, launching us several rows into the stands. This time I can remember what happened though. Something very hard (probably a shoulder pad) had collided with my face. I emerged with a concussion and a knocked out tooth (on the same side of my face that was recently broken). At the next doctor checkup for my face the doc told me it was a miracle that my cheekbone wasn't hit. Because everything was still healing, the consequences would have been much worse than the first time. Someone told me afterwards that Herky walked into the tunnel that goes under the stands and never returned to the game. |

Snowboarding has been the roughest on me. Ruptured spleen and collapsed lung from the same crash. Surgery that night, week in ICU, another week in a regular hospital room, six months of no lifting over 10 pounds or strenuous activity.
Dislocated elbow. Fell back and posted my arm. Elbow went the other way. More pain than I knew existed, then the rehab started. Still hurts and clicks and gets stuck sometimes. My funny bone is extremely sensative. I've got more, but there really aren't good stories. They all start with mtn biking, skateboarding, snowboarding and a crash. |

I used to ride BMX. All the time. From say, age 11 to age 14, every day, I was finding new things to jump off of. When I was 14, the summer before 9th grade, I went to a semi-familiar jump. Hadn't been in a year or so, but I remembered how it had been and tore straight into a practice run. It was a big hill, with a smallish jump at the bottom. Well, in the time I'd been away from it, a BMX-tire sized hole had formed after the jump. I went down the hill, went over the jump, didn't pull up 'cuz I was just trying to get a feel for it. Well, of course, front tire went into the hole. I was going FAST, that hill was huge, so I flipped over the bars straight onto my face. Hurt like hell, but I was alright. Started to get up, felt something hit me hard in the back of the head. At that point, I passed out. My friend who was with me informed me of the rest. My bike had slowly flipped forward in the hole (this is a 25 pound bike, not terribly light) and smashed my face into the ground by the seat. Gave me a hell of a concussion, and rearranged my face. Broke my nose and jaw, knocked out two teeth, did something bad to my sight. That was probably my worst injury so far. I'm just now getting back on bikes, and it's been almost three years. I still black out pretty often, and I've had double vision since, but I'm alright. My biggest issue is I can't focus on a damn thing, and I used to be a genius child. My dad and teachers don't realize that I really, truly can't focus, and I get **** for it all the time. "We know you're so smart, you just need to try."

Travis Pastrana had the best answer for this. When he was asked about his worst crashes, he said he couldn't remember them, just woke up in the hospital.

Once showing off for some girls, jumping a dirt bike doing wheelies, that kind of stuff, I popped a wheelie on the black top hit some oil back wheel spun while I was in the air, caught, and the bike went straight up and landed on me. I thought I was OK, hopped on the bike, and when I went to shift the bike in gear, my foot wouldn't respond. I had my car there already, so I sat side ways, and drove into town to the hospital. Lucky for me it was an auto trany.
When I got to the hospital, I couldn't walk, had a guy go in and tell them to come get me. Turns out I broke my knee straight across the joint. I didn't have any insurance, so they sent me home, no pills, no booze. Man when the adrenalin wore off I was HURTIN'. I lay down on the bed, and the leg kept falling over and the bones grating. Finally, I thought I had it propped up where it would stay, and it fell over again, I went out like a light, I guess from shock and pain. Next morning I came to, called around and made a deal with a doc to set the joint as best he could, and put a cast on it. They changed the cast nine times before I could walk again. The doc said it was a miracle, but the knee healed up pretty good. I used to sit in the floor and put a set a bar bells across my knee to push it down and straighten it out. Still bothers me in cold weather, but it turned out pretty good. I can't complain.

Some stitches, some broken toes...nothing life threating.....yet.
Mostly I'm now just slowly falling apart, like what Louis CK describes in this bit....

Four cracked ribs in dirt bike crash. Various minor fractures in various sports. Lost 1/3 of hair for a year due to infected tick bite. Two minor accidental shot wounds (1 pellet, 1 .38). One intentional cut up inner thigh. Broken jaw when a pull bar snapped. Not an accident but both retinas worked loose in my eyes due to nearsightedness. That was the worst, blind for a week before havin' any idea if the fixin' took, missed 4 months of work waiting for fluid in my eyes to regenerate. Oh, bit by a copperhead, but it was a dry bite so I don't quite count it.
