Actualy there is a reason they are small, not so much thin but I belive it plays into it.
When the Stones were very young WWii rationing was in effect, there was very little protein available. ( IIRC eggs weren't widely available in the UK until sometime in the 50s,) this has been proven to "stunt growth" and alter the way your body processes nutrients for you whole life. The small faces were "small" for the same reason. One of the 60s London fashion designers, is famously on
record, with a quote something along the lines of " all those skinny malnourished children of rationing.i just hung things on them
and it looked fabulous.."

Obviously it affects different people in different ways, the Beatles were not terribly thin in their twenties nor were the Who..but looking at photos of the 60s esp of London you will notice how small many young people are. Particularly working class kids from the east end etc.

A guy I worked with was telling me that his "supper" for him and his 9 siblings when they got home from school was. Bread with SUGAR sprinkled on it!?

And for a rare treat they had jam, but mainly sugar on bread.

I wish I could drink all the booze these guys have and still be thin.

After years of swillin beer and scotch 'n' coke, I am now a fat bastard. :)

What is their secret ?

well, to be fair, Joey had all sorts of weird physical ailments his whole life (he was born sterile, and suffered with extreme OCD, just to name a couple.) he's probably not the best example in this case (although Dee Dee, on the other hand...)

and as much as i love Iggy's music, he's just...friggin icky (you KNOW there's something wrong when you have more veins than skin!) like someone else said, "when was the last time that guy wore a shirt?!" but Iggy's also consumed his fair share of..substances, over the years. i have to say, though, that Iggy & The Stooges had one of THE FUNNIEST concert riders of ALL TIME!! just got to The Smoking Gun website, click on "Backstage" and then find the rider (i think it's listed as "Iggy Pop" instead of "Iggy and the Stooges".) one of the highlights is the band asking for a fan at the front of the stage, so "Iggy can pretend he's in a Bon Jovi video and wave his hair around" or something to that effect. the whole thing is pure friggin' comedy GOLD!

but there ARE plenty of musicians "of that age" that don't look nearly as skeletal as Mick and Keef. Lemmy is a good example (and he probably did more drugs last week than the Stones did all last decade!) he looks pretty healthy, relatively speaking, and he's never looked like a Twiglet.

David Bowie was fairly thin (obviously, he WAS the Thin White Duke, after all!), but he never looked anorexic, and still looks very fit to this day, even given a several-year stint on smack. in fact, i think he easily looks ten years younger than he really is.

David Gilmour was pretty trim back in the day, but he's downright pudgy these days. i mean, he's obviously a bit overweight, but he still looks pretty healthy for his age...but then again, maybe i'm a "young American" and i'm used to people looking like that. i don't know. but Roger Waters and Nick Mason both look "healthy" these days as well.

and then there's Macca and Ringo Starr...both are still pretty trim (although Paul's a grass-eater, so i'd imagine that might have a little bit to do with it;) i kid, i kid...vegans are fine by me.)

i guess my point is that all of these people are pretty much the peers of Mick and Keef, yet they don't look like stick figures. i'd have to reckon that being in the Stones MUST account for their twiggly-ness in some way! they're skinnier than Brian Jones! (<--...what, too soon?)

as kids we called them... "the Strolling Bones"..

. more of a twist on the name, I think.... or maybe we thought they looked skinny...

I can't remember which...

Before one of the Stones tours a few years back, Keith was quoted as saying "The chicks still dig me".

I always thought music is the domain of the wimpy kid. Does the term "band geeks" ring any bells.

They never visited a dentist and their poor teeth keep them on a liquid and chemical diet--very low calorie, carb, and fat intake.

As funny as it sounds, there's prolly and element of truth to that!

I dunno about the rest of them but Keith's teeth are not originals. Watch the Altamont Speedway Free Festival video sometime.......
