Thanks. Curious that they left 'Train' out after remarking about it's importance.

Tread lightly...

that whole Paul Burlison vs Hank Garland thing
might rear it's head.

Check out the Tiny Bradshaw version of "Train".
Johnny & co. dragged it right through the swamp.
Bradshaw-Burnette-Yardbirds-Aerosmith, each
version has something to offer.

Yeah, I was waiting to hear "Train", too.

Paul's Esquire sounded great, though. Nice and snarly.
What amp did he use for those recordings. In '56 it would have been kind of tweedville, I'd think.

I don't buy the Paul Burlison/Grady Martin debate. None of the solos sound like Martin. Influenced by him perhaps, but they lack his attack. There are tons of Martin's performances out there and often you'll here tones or motifs repeated. None of those are present on what would have been likely considered another "throwaway" rock'n'roll session or on any of Martin's sessions afterwards. On top of that Burlison never had any trouble reproducing the playing on the records.

I did not know that bit about Paul Burlison playing behind Howlin Wolf.

I meant Grady Martin. Hank Garland on the brain I guess.
Now if I could just PLAY like him.

WOW..THESE CATS ROCKED!!!

Man, "Train Kept A Rollin" knocks the Yardbirds version into the gutter. Now this is my kind of rock & roll..raw, powerful, hit & miss but full of passion.
Ricky Nelson used to always joke about the Burnett boys. He said they liked to fight...were always mixing it up.
They also camped out in their car in front of Ozzie & Harriet's home until Rick finnally would hear their songs....one was "Believe What You Say." Great tune....
I loved this trio!

hey bo...

no offense but maybe you haven't heard too much of the classic rockabilly decca / coral sessions grady played on... because there is TONS of stuff out there that sounds exactly like his work with johnny burnette... ( don woody, johhny carroll are two classic examples... )

imho paul played on the NY sessions and together with martin maybe on train kept a rollin and blues stay away from me... i'm pretty sure harold bradley appears on some of the tracks also... i've had a lot of this info verified first hand throughout the years...

there are even some sessions pre-dating train kept a rollin that grady played on that have the octave riff on it... everybody's trying to be my baby by the york brothers comes to mind... get the 2 decca vaults bear familly CDs and you'll hear for yourself... tj

tj, that's just it. I'm very familiar with that stuff. I DON'T think Martin's stuff sounds like Paul Burlison's on the R'n'R Trio sessions. I have no doubt Burlison was a fan of Martin's work and it shows in his playing, but it sounds like two different guys to my ears.

Hey thanks,

That's pretty cool. No wonder I like my Top Hat Club Deluxe with my Muddy Waters tele so much. :D

The TH Club Deluxe is kind of like a Vox preamp with a 6v6 Tweed Deluxe power amp.

bo...

wow... i guess perceptions can really differ... do yourself a favor and check out the grady martin 45 / 78 instrumental of when my dreamboat comes home... it has every lick on it that you hear on the burnette recordings and more... if that still doesn't convince you nothing will...

fwiw... i've seen paul many times too and other than tear it up, train kept a rollin' and honey hush he couldn't even approximate grady's original picking or style and chops on the records...

honestly, play tear it up and rockbilly boogie back to back and if that's the same guitar player we are talkin' the 9th wonder of the world... that's 3 months of time between sessions...

anyway, you have your perception and i have mine... it's all good... let me know what you think after you hear when my dreamboat comes true...
