Heroes You Love To Hate

I recently had a disagreement on another thread with another member concerning Eric Johnson. I really like EJ but the other member isn't impressed.

Which brings up an interesting topic.........

Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Beatles, BB King, Danny Gatton........Talent is not an issue. They are all legendary performers.....BUT.....I just can't get into them. Listening is a chore rather than a joy......yet I almost feel guilty about my disdane.

Anyone want to make me feel better and disclose similar feelings about some well noted legends? :?

OK Guys,

Your starting to bring me down. I just went and bought a black hat and a black puffy sleeved shirt, and was planning on heading out to Nashville to get a gig.
Now it seems that some folks may not like that sort of thing, but I spent allot of money on this amp, guitar and outfit.

I kind of like the sound of a cheep acoustic guitar through a five inch speaker with overdrive.

Well, you could still wear the outfit for other things, I guess. Maybe flamenco dancing?

I feel the same about Clapton, Elvis, and the Beatles.

Hope that makes you feel better.

Hope this doesn't degenerate...

On the surface, I don't like "negative" subjects, but I am mysteriously attracted to them...

Love to hate: Aerosmith. Blues retrospective? I guess I'm a snob.

Love to hate: John Mellancamp. Can't think of a single song I like.

Love to hate: Bruce Sprinky (Springsteen). I love his guitar, but hate his arrangements. All the fluffy ringy ding ding sounds. Why not make it straight rock?

Hate to love: ELO. Listening to it right now. Great stuff.

Love affair with: Danny Gatton. Wish I could, but I can't. Ever.

I agree with ya JMH65.

IMO, while talented, Clapton and The Beatles just don't do it for me. I have EC's "From The Cradle" and a couple of Beatles CD's. They're good but I'll generaly listen to something else. Also the other posts re: Aerosmith and Springsteen, I wish both would go away. Steven Tyler is just plain obnoxious and Springsteen (who I loved in high school) takes himself too seriously while living in Beverly Hills (plus his voice sounds old).

On a positive note, the last few months I've bought a number of Rory Gallagher CD's and one of his DVD's. What a great, passionate guitarist and someone who could play it all. His "Irish Tour" CD is my favorite and basically shows what he was all about. He even plays a Tele on some songs! This May will be the 10 anniversary of his passing.

Alvin,

You would be okay as long as you didn't include shades or try to make a first position G chord look REALLY BIG.

It's not so much that I hate them, it's I just don't get it.

Elvis.
Kiss.
Springsteen.
Coltrane.
New Age.
Country.

Just about everything else I'm okay with.

The very first "TELECASTER" bass...........

I couldn't believe my eyes! I was at a Western Swing Festival night before last, and I saw a guy playing a Telecaster bass. Now, I've seen many before this, but you don't see a lot of them anymore. Well, the guy playing the thing was getting off the stage, and I was getting ready to take the stage, (to play guitar) and I asked him how old it was. He pointed to another man, and said the other guy owned it, and loved to talk about it.

When I had a chance, I asked the owner about the Tele bass, and he told me that LEO FENDER made it and it was the VERY FIRST one. Leo Fender gave it to a friend (of the current owner) that played bass for Bob Wills. The bass player it was given to origionaly, never quite liked it (He played Bass fiddle) and just kept it at home for about ten years.
Then one night the man that owns it now, borrowed it to play a gig, and ended up buying it.

I looked closely at the instrument, and noticed that the logo on the headstock reads: "Precision Bass" . I guess it was the only logo that was printed at the time. This bass has to be very old, and other than being grundgy, and not showing signs of ever being cleaned, is in pretty good shape. It is, however not contoured in any way.
I thought it was cool to get to see it.

Any one care to enlighten me as to when Fender started making basses? The present owner bought the bass from the origional owner in 1960.

I usually don't go for negative threads either, but...

Neil Young. Everyone says how great he is but I do not enjoy much of his music no matter how hard I try.

damn double posting

WEBMASTER EDIT -- DOUBLE POSTING COMES FROM USING THE BACK BUTTON AND THEN RESUBMITTING THE BLANK PAGE WHEN A WINDOW POPS UP AND SAYS TO VIEW THE PAGE YOU HAVE TO RESUBMIT THE FORM AND YOU CLICK OK.

DON'T USE THE BACK BUTTON AFTER YOU POST. YOU ARE TAKEN TO A PAGE THAT SAYS DO YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR POST OR GO TO THE FORUM. PICK ONE OF THOSE TWO CHOICES. YOU ALMOST NEVER NEED THE BACK BUTTON -- THERE ARE LINKS EVERYWHERE YOU COULD WANT TO GO.

With me, it's more "don't get" than hate.

As far as Danny Gatton goes, most of his stuff leaves me cold, but I love his Sun Medley with Delbert McClinton and his "There the Stands the Glass" with Robert Gordon. Other than that I like it simple. As a country player my absolute fav stuff is Brent Mason on the Alan Jackson recordings. Living on Love is my all time favorite.
My $.02 anyway.

AMEN!!

What I sometimes hate is when I find myself sounding like my old man saying I hate certain types of music.

However...... as far as I am concerned (which means very little in the scheme of things) Led Zep was the beginning of a type of crappy music which continues to exist.

Man.... I hate what I wrote...........

"heroes" listed in this thread that I 'hate':
Bruce Springsteen
New Age (new-age ryhmes with sewage)

"heroes" listed who doesn't move the needle in either direction:
Eric Johnson, Aerosmith, John Mellencamp, Mother Teresa

Other than that I love the rest listed:
Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Beatles, BB King, Danny Gatton, Esteban, Paul McCartney, Kiss, Coltrane, Led Zep, U2, Telecaster bass [? ], Neil Young, Kurt Cobain

Seems like a lot of good music is being missed and dismissed. No worries tho.

I love a lot of the things you guys hate:

Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Neil Young, Kurt Cobain...

I still think Eric Johnson is elevator music though.

Who is Esteban?

The Fender Precision Bass was introduced in 1951. It evolved into the contoured P-bass that we all know and love in the mid-1950s. That design was re-issued by Fender in 1968 as the "Telecaster Bass".

Every Joe Satriani song I ever heard makes me think he'd be much better with a lead singer :-)

In fact, almost all guitar virtuosos turn me off. I'm all about songs. That's why I love Bill Kirchen and don't care a lot for Danny Gatton. Kirchen sings songs I like and then fills them up with great guitar licks and tricks. Gatton takes great guitar licks and tricks and builds a song around them. It's amazing, but completely uninspiring to me.

I remember a few years back when I asked opinions about Robert Cray so I could decide whether or not I should go see him. Most of the opinions were that it was a boring show because he didn't really stand out and play amazing solos. I went to the show and found a performer that sings great songs, plays solid and interesting rhythm patterns to support the song, and keeps the band real tight. One of the better shows I've had the pleasure of seeing.

whoa, likening led zeppelin to music of today made me cringe. What i can see is the corelation between bonham's death and the crap music of the 80's and 90's and 00's........which is also what i hate (big generalization of course, with exceptions)

C'mon! You guyz don't find U2 to be inspiring and constantly "re-inventing" themselves?

Well...I agree with you 100% They were new and fresh 23 years ago. I don't hate them, just don't know what all the ruckus is about the new album. Somebody teach edge some new guitar chords. (although you could say the same about at least one I have listed below)

Elvis is lost on me too.

Zep- I like them, started out much like Cream, then became innovators, influenced many of those that came later.

Beatles- I grew up with them (not literally!) wide and vast influences. Love 75% of their stuff. Still- I hate some of their stuff (Yellow Submarine).

Love/hate relationship with "Bruce"

Talk about someone who's re-invented himself (but keeps coming back to his roots?) Neil Young. Folk/Rock, Grunge, 50's Rock, Country, Rock, TWS (totally weird stuff). Hee-hee, I love him!

My opinions only, YMMV (and probably will).

Brian

Stuff me no likey:

Kurt Cobain, and pretty much every one of the bands he inspired.

Boy bands, starting with the Beatles.

Creed.

And choose any or all of the bands that seem to think they're punk bands these days. Blink, Bowling for Soup, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, etc. All they are is a bad imitation of 60's bubblegum with distortion. Green Day,(I used to hate them too) is exempt because they have actually become a really original band that writes pertinent music.

Stuff I just don't get, but do respect:

EJ

Gatton (Although his version of In My Room is one of my all time favorite pieces of recorded music).

Stuff I don't even deem worthy of contemplation:

Malmsteen

Satriani

New U2 record

There, I said it, and you can't make me take it back!

I've got friends that worship these guys but I don't get it. Sure you can watch them play and be dazzled by their talent but their music doesn't mean anything - at least not to me. I'd be surprized if anyone ever made a baby or cried in their beer while listening to anything they've ever done.
