.....are pop bands, pure and simple. You may not like them, but you shouldn't blame them for the label "punk pop." They didn't invent it.

......Yeah, they can play a million notes a minute, and hit 'em all.

Can they write a song that you can hum along with?

That makes your wife's hips sway?

That has a cool/interesting lyric?

That has a memorable hook?

They do NADA for me.
I'll add that Malmsteen fella to this comment...

Awe Eric, you know me. I don't blame those poor mis guided young men for anything. (now the parents of the people who buy their records, that's a different story .)

I just said I didn't like 'em. And I do like alot of pop. Here are some pop bands that I do deem worthy of being part of my own little private universe, of which I am lord and master, where my opinion is the only one that matters. (I like living there whenever possible, but I do realize that other parralell realities exist )

The Gin Blossoms
Cheap Trick
Material Issue
The Alarm
The Cars
The Police
The Pretenders

Now THOSE are pop bands.

DISCLAIMER: I am well aware that I live in the past, and I am probably just too old to understand today's pop music . But as I said before, I am king of my own reality, and in my world, these bands are much better than the new ones.

Hey! My "universe" has similarities! You can add "Torpedos"-era Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to that list, too, IMHO.

To Bowling For Soup's credit, they were doing that thing ten years ago, long before that style became fashionable. They finally caught on after paying their dues for years on the bar circuit. And they're really nice guys. Too bad that when they finally got some national attention, their style had already been made stale by Blink 182...

Oh, and Chris Van Malmsteen is a rock god.

The Eagles -- gawd I hate them. Especially the Randy Meisner songs. And Hotel California. I just don't get them at all. What a waste of Joe Walsh's talent.

The Bowling For Soup guys are great. It was nice to see them have a little success after playing the Denton bar scene for so long.

....I like a lot of those too. I do like some stuff by some of these new "pop punk" bands, but I'm a sucker for a hook, a self-confessed pop junkie. :)

I have Bowling For Soup's latest album, "A Hangover You Don't Deserve," and it's pretty damn good. The video for their single "1985" is really good, too.

I thought it was supposed to be guitar Heroes you love to hate, not just bands you hate right?

because if its bands then Ive got a laundry list

I thought the idea was generally accepted guitar heroes that your don't really like to listen to, if thats the case then I have a big one I am sure I will get flamed for.

Hendrix.

Great player, i guess, to me it was mostly about his passion and taste, which is critical, but he gets listed by every rock mag as the greatest of all time, and to me that is just madness and marketing.

Me neither too! Jim Morrison was a perv extrordinaire. My first wife was a big Doors nut. Riders on the Storm and Roadhouse Blues are about the only things I like about them.

What could be more glamorous than Chris Van Malmsteen, lead guitarist for Bowling For Soup? I've seen him stick a guitar pick to the sweat on his forehead and have it stay there for a whole set.

Heroes I love to hate:

1) Clapton: hasn't done anything interesting since Blind Faith or Derek & the Dominos, which ever came last.

2) Larry Carlton: just too smooth for me.

3) Lee Ritenour: see Carlton

4) Eric Johnson: I've already said it -- elevator music.

5) Stevie Ray Vaughn: Every song sounds the same, his schtick gets old fast.

6) Stanley Jordan: elevator music part deux.

7) Pete Anderson: I dunno why, he just doesn't reach me. I think I really dislike him more as a producer than a guitarist, 'cause he's married to the click track and everything he touches sounds mechanical and forced.

8) Vai/Satriani/Malmsteen: technique uber alles.

9) Prince: (on guitar) flashy noodling, dreadful tone.

DUDE! you nailed it. great technical players, yet they have NO soul whatsoever. Yet Eddie VH couls play those crazy technical stuff, yet his stuff (DLR days of course) was all sing-able. Think Hot for Teacher riff. and solo for example. Brilliant.
