You are absolutely right slim.I once visited my drummer friend when he was studying in Berklee and I sat behind a drum kit in one of the practice rooms.I started playing a simple "zeibekiko" just to make fun and suddenly ALL this monster drummers gathered around the kit and started asking questions trying to figure out this "amazingly complex" rhythm I was playing !
Let me tell you even my 90 year old granma who doesn't know a drumstick from a broom can play that beat!!

kick and snare, kick and snare

if your drummer has more cymbals than drums get a new drummer. Charlie Watt, Stan Lynch,Vince Santoro and Jim E. Christie lay down a great groove with a simple 5-piece or less kit.

Note to all drummers:

Brass is a spice, not a staple.

Good drummers

Keith Moon was a riot - I love listening to him. Great! - but he wouldn't make my short list of drummers to hire.

Give me
#1 Charlie Watts or
#2 Max Weinberg or
#3 Ringo...
guys who can keep the beat, keep the rest of the band together, keep things groovin'.

The best drummer I ever played with made everyone in the room sound better.
