I treated myself to some 'new old' CDs and among others I picked up a great Faces compilation called "Nice Boys... Woody's playing is just killing me, especially the boogie numbers. I haven't sat down with the CD yet, but did he play mostly in open tunings?

My favourite is the Faces "A Nod is as good as a Wink...". But out of curiosity, do a search for "The Birds", Ronnie's band before the Faces. I'm sure they were short lived but recordings may exist.

The Birds had nothing to do with the Yardbirds did they?
It's really amazing how you can link Clapton, Beck and Page
together and watch the different bands that sprout around them. What a time that must've been.

FWIW Ronnie Wood had a really funny "Brian Jones" style haircut at the time. The photos I've seen of the Birds are totally hilarious. Very different from the look he had with The Faces and Stones.

Thats the title of the Faces box set which was put together by my pal Ian Mclagan of the Faces.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the box....it's the best box set ever!!!

Agreed. No one remembers how thoroughly Rod Stewart & The Faces rocked.

I'll forth that (can you "fourth" something?) Anyway, the Faces were Rod Stewart's best years, IMO. Woodie asserted himself in that band way more than he ever did with the Stones. I miss that - he had some fuzzy, hairy tone on some of those tunes, like "Stay With Me."

I was just thinking about the Faces. A radio station has classic rock history shows, bout an hour long , and they had one about the faces. I've been wanting to start a collection.

Didn't beck play in the Small Faces, just before the Faces? Either way, great time for Rod Stewart

from many standpoints, but mainly because not a lot of folks can sing like Rod or Ronnie Lane for that matter. Could have been the whiskey on the tonsils. They had a bar on the stage for christsakes!

Sorry to say, but you got it backwards. Ronnie played bass and Rod sang in the first incarnation of The Jeff Beck Group. Their first album was actually as the GTOs. Then TJBG.

The boxset is on my wish list, as is the Mac's Bump Band.
Having most recently seen Woody in a satire (him, Jagger, and Richards did this really unfunny spoof of the Rolling Stones that night :o ) I really never thought much about his playing. He has almost a piano player's feel to his boogie. And anyone that shared a stage with Mr. Beck most be better off for it.

I was reading about "Five Guys Walk Into a Bar" on Ian McLagan's site a while back but I haven't seen the Box Set around anywhere yet. But all this talk of the Faces got me wanting to hear them again... During my lunch break I went to a normally overpriced CD store and scored "Good Boys" on sale for $7.99.

I only knew the two 'common' tunes on 'Good Boys..', I really think the selection is awesome. They could have tried to sell more with Maggie May, You Wear it Well, etc., but it seems to me that Rhino gave it a good deal of thought.

I didn't say anyone was playing anything! just mentioned some names. All of which rocked throughout their time had. Bass or guitar ronnie is still cool

The Faces boxset is great, IMHO. It reminded me where Rod and Ron's reputations came from, as most of their more recent* stuff is a major disappointment to me, at least. And order the boxset and the book from Ian- he'll personalize it and share some great stories with you!

*Recent being the last 3/4 of their careers.
