I live in San Ramon and work in Pleasanton. Paul, our band played the Bistro in Hayward in January, at the corner of B Street and ... Mission, maybe? Apparently it was a pawn shop years ago.

I lived in SF in the late 80's. I was there during the quake of '89. I lived out in the Richmond for awhile. Later, I moved to the Mission Disctrict...on South Van Ness. I played in a band that was gigging the area at that time. For money, I was a messenger.

Bay Area
I live in San Jose and work in Hayward. FYI to the ex-residents, the University recently changed its name from California State University, Hayward to California State University, East Bay. It's already been (informally) nicknamed Cal State eBay. Pretty funny...

I know the Bistro. It used to be a Rexall Drug store (where I got the then over-the-counter substance that induced my first psychedelic experience). The pawn shop was a block down B-Street at Mission. Boy, the guitars that passed threw that place. If I only knew then what I know now.
They renamed the University? What's the point? Though I do like the ebay reference. |

My parents both "emigrated" there from Mississippi. They actually met out there though. I was born in Kaiser Hosp. in Oakland in ' 63.I lived in Hayward at the end of Kelly hill by Don Castro park from birth until 1975.Then everywhere else. I went to Fairview school for kindergarten ,the Markham School from 1st grade thru 6th
Man,that pawnshop used to blow my mind .So many guitars & firearms all through the 60s & 70s I actually bought a Fawn 100w Marshall there in 1990 for 3 bills I came back there as an adult in 1990 when I was in the USCG.I stayed out there after I got out in '93 but I had to split in '98

Skully, the Mormon Temple is in the hills north of 580, so I don't think that anything could be downtown and still be near the temple.
Are you thinking of Fenton's, the old-fashioned ice cream parlor on Piedmont Ave? That was the victim of arson, apparently be a former employee, a few years ago, but it's been rebuilt. A great place, not so great for the waistline!

I can remember being drived down MacArthur Blvd. when I was a kid and seeing pimps beat up their whores on the sidewalk. Was that downtown or simply beautiful West Oakland? My brother lives on Lakeshore Dr. on Lake Merritt. What part of town is that? What part of town is the Grand Lake Theatre in? |

I lived in Richmond for a few years (right next to Hilltop Mall). Was there for the earthquake also. Used to go to the I-Beam to check out bands back in the late 80's. Did some freelance work for Mix Magazine/Electronic Musician in Emeryville (are they building that place up, or what!!?) and used to go up into the Marin hills to interview all the musicians that had “made it”. Haven't been to the Oakland pawn shops for awhile, but used to always stop in when I had to take recording equipment into Leo's for repair. Live in Sacramento now, but I'm down in San Jose and Oakland twice a week on business.
P.S. You Half moon bay, Moss Beach guys... I used to surf there all the time!! |

I tried driving down there to surf on the weekends for a few months after I moved to Sacramento, but the waves were too unpredictable and it's a long drive. Hope you have some great waves tonight. I'll be there in spirit :) |

the earthquake was a really memorable experience. not just the actual quake, but the aftermath...how people acted...bars were giving away beer by candle light...people huddled around battery powered tv's... wild and crazy.. |

Moondoggie, it's a bluegrass band called GrassFire. Here's the website: http://grassfire.mcguffin.com
We're playing at the Englander Pub in Dublin on 4/30/05, if you feel like catching us. From your website, it looks like your teaching business is doing very well. Good for you!
