Any former Sinus Surgery patients?

I'm having surgery on the 11th. I've been miserable for months. The scan found I had a deviated septum and a polyp. He also wants to do something in there with a Laser. Whats your experience with surgery and what can I expect with the whole thing? Thanks

Didn't have the laser, just the deviated septum thing. Just basic surgery, hurt for a few days, nothing big. Was supposed to help with the sinus infections I was getting, but never noticed a difference.

sinus surgery

I had surgery 2 yrs ago for nasal polyps and a giant cyst in my right sinus cavity. It had been completey clooged most of my life, but I didn't know any different. I had reached a point where sleep was difficult and allergies were unbearable.

The surgery went well and the constant ache in my face that I had always had disappeared. Funny how I noticed more when it was gone. I never knew the difference, I guess. Sleep became wonderful and restful for a change.

The only bad side was removing the bandages from inside each nostril. That hurt like hell.

Good Luck!!

i had a deviated septum fixed, as a side effect of a pituitary surgery (lol twice).
my nose was not my biggest concern afterward. actually they did it different each time.
the first time, the stuffed both nostrils and sinus's , with gauze, and i had some sort of humidifier on my mouth all day, then they removed the gauze in one big pull after a couple days. it hurt, but was nothing too bad.
my breathing afterward...
HUGELY IMPROVEDi used to snore very loudly, now i dont think i snore at all, and my nose works a ton better.
the second time i think they lightly gauzed one side, then used a "trumpet" on the other side.and i could breahte thru my nose right away through the trumpet. i wont tell you the part where it sort of slid out and some intern jammed it back up my nose. that was very bad.. er i mean. yea i won't tell you. make sure it doesnt slip out :P
both came out easier a couple days later
not too bad. of course not pleasant either, but they'll give you pain killers
p.s. i went to boston the second one, and they were experts at mass general. dr. swearingen especially, but all around it was really a lot better than here at the new haven hospital (st raphaels) just my personal experience this one time of course.. er two times
i notice you live near there, so i'd say your prolly gonna be in experienced hands, they do those surgeries all the time

I had it done for a deviateds septum and to help me breathe better, It took months to totally heal, and except for a few months after the surgery, there has been no improvement at all.

One lovely bonus....every time I get a cold now, I get a massive sinus infection too. Woo Hoo!

Sinus Trouble?

I had the deviated septum, cavities cleared, and one enlarged because it was never the right size.
It was well worth it, I could never breathe through my nose until I was 38 years old.
With the sinus surgery and three years of immunotherapy my respiratory system is 10x better than when I was a teenager.

I had sinus surgery 3 yrs ago (at age 54) for a really large polyp and a deviated septum. Outpatient stuff done on a Thursday. He discovered and took care of two other sinus problems (don't remember what, perforated sinus?), making the procedure more than expected and fairly extensive. I was pretty messed up for 24 hrs, returned to work (but not very effectively) on the following Monday. Some discomfort for one week, and nostrils clotted up dead tight for over two weeks. Frequent saline flush during that time to help heal/free up nostrils. Once my nose cleared the breathing was so much freer it felt like my nostrils were about the size of garbage cans! Didn't realize how much my breathing had been constricted before. Have had no problems at all since surgery. Like it never happened.
My surgeon was a hoot - he mighta been Kinky Friedman masquerading as a doctor - black ostrich cowboy boots and all!
Best of luck for a quick recovery!

i had the deviated septum and polyps and all. i never did anything about it and maybe need to... One thing i remember my dr. saying was that the deviated septum can become deviated again after the surgery..
