A boob at the Beeb
Paradoxically funny and disturbing at the same time:

It could have been someone in their early 20s who'd grown up hearing his name and music but without ever actually hearing that he was dead. Just assumed he was still in Jamaica, probably.
My son is 18. I'll ask him tomorrow if he knows anything about Bob's current state. I'm curious now. |

It doesn't seem that off to me that someone in their 20's might not know that Marley is dead. If you weren't "around" when he died, you might assume that given the prevalence of his music and his image on t-shirts and posters that he was alive. Ask your average person if BB King, John Lee Hooker, or Albert King are alive. I must admit I had to stop and think a minute the other day on whether Albert Collins was dead.
In other news, who is this loneliest monk I keep hearing about?

I don't get it...
To qoute Tom Hanks from Big: I don't get it.
It's disturbing than someone from a news organization did not know that the hallowed Bob Marley was dead? Who cares? If I ever, ever hear another Bob Marley song again it will be too soon. Bob Marley was big in college because it announced that you were a sophisticated person who appreciated ALL kins of music. You couldn't walk by a frat house without hearing a dozen drunk brothers singing No Woman... I know that the conventional musical wisdom is that Bob was some kind of genius and blah blah blah... |

That's too bad you have that association with his music, and I'm not saying this in a disapproving way. There are bands I still can't listen to basically because of the people who liked them. I even like some of their songs but I'm "Grateful" not to have to hear about some of them. I'll also pass on the Margarita's also. Ed |

Kudos to your boy, though--he knew Bob was dead. Maybe he should be the one working at BBC Three. Joel |
