I was going through some boxes last weekend and found an old issue of Guitar World circa 1990. In there was an interview with the lead guitarist from Great White, Mark Kendall. In the article he talked about how some of his vintage guitars looked much better after they'd been exposed to lots of cigarette smoke. He even had a special shack built behind his house that he would hang guitars in and have dozens of ashtrays with lit cigarettes burning constantly. He had a kind of boring looking white Les Paul (I think) that he put in there for 2 weeks and when it came out it was a beautiful cream color. I have to admit I'm kinda curious to try this.

I bought a brand new Fender 4x12 cab several years ago, to mate with a 70s era Bassman 70 head. I took the "silver face" style grill cover off the cab and left it behind the drummer at a local bar for a month.

When I got it back, it matched the Bassman perfectly.

I'm sure the Beatles' guitars were well smoked.
The Beatles themselves certainly were.

I've always suspected that smoke and spilt beer was somehow a factor in the tone of old guitars.

For a vintage look you can also book your guitar a sunbed session. UV light would age it. That would be cheaper than buying lots of cigarettes.

They do it with Hams don't they? Here in Austin there ought to be a number of Barbecue places that would smoke your guitars. I like my brisket to have that red band that forms from the smoke penetration of about eight hours in a smoker. I'm not sure I want that on my Tele's though.
