why do you suppose?
okay.. i am just curious. Am i doing something wrong? I have posted twice my Gibson Les Paul in the Garage Sale and it has been there for weeks and not a single inquiry! Not one! and we have the gibson discussion page that links to it as well. I am quite a bit better at buying geetars than selling them, but honestly, is there something not cool with my add? I even lowered the price... almost $200- lower than buying new and it is a barely played 1 year old geetar...
Is there something in my add that puts people off this geetar? Is there another way (or place) to sell guitars? (other than Ebay of course).. Help a brother out with some advice. I honestly don't get what i am doing wrong, other than not giving the thing away for nothing. I find it hard to believe that this puppy just wont sell. I am starting to think it is just my salespersonship or something. -kp8-- |

Isn't that
kind of like selling a foreign car to a guy that works in a GM plant?

It's the price
That was a good one Darrell! :D
But seriously, it is priced too high. ALMOST 200 off what a dude could buy one for new in the store don't cut it on the 'net. It was 5-600 cheaper, THEN you might get a few inquiries. It will still be hard to sell, but you'll get more interest. And if you think you are taking it in the shorts on this deal, pedals are much worse. A Demeter Tremulator is $200 new and I've seen them for less than $100 on Ebay. |

I think you definately have to make it cheaper. Personally, I wouldn't take a risk buying a guitar from an individual I've never met, without seeing the guitar, when it's only about 7-10% off the selling price of a new guitar. I'd much rather drive to the store and buy a new one.

I honestly think that this is textbook case of supply and demand.
The TDPRI garage sale might not be the best place to sell a LP because most of us here lean towards Fender guitars, specially Telecasters. That's why we hang out in this board! I'd conclude that the demand for LP's in this forum is close to nil. In my case, I'm always hunting for cheap axes and I simply pay no attention to $1000 guitars. Most of us in the TDPRI would use a 1000 bucks to get a RI, a Rob-caster, a Kevin-caster, or a very good amp. I don't think folks here are waiting for an LP to show up in the GS. Just my opinion. I'd post my ad in Harmony Central or go straight to eBait. Good luck.

With all the online transaction scams these days... well you know. I recently read about a guy who was selling his Martin online and before the buyer would send the money he asked if the seller would email a pic of the guitar in the bathroom. Odd but he thought okay. As soon as he did, the money showed up in his Paypal account. Then he realized that the photo proved that he actually posessed the real Martin to ship. Just my thought when I saw your ad.

Well, I just looked at the ad. It's for the Spc. Faded Dbl. cut right? I do think the price is a bit high. Not bad, but a little high. People shop the net to get stellar deals, and that particular guitar isn't really an "in demand" piece. I garuntee, by the time I bought that guitar from you, and paid for shipping, I could get the same deal at the local GC if I hammered 'em a little, and that would be for a brand new one. I realize yours is in minty shape, but used is still used, you dig what I'm saying? If I were in the market for one of those, (which I'm not, I have a '57 reissue Special already), I would be looking to pay about $425-$450 and no more than $30 shipping.
Just my 2 sense, but the reason I generally buy used, is because things are way cheaper. Again, not telling you what to do with your stuff, just what I think. Jake

One other thing to consider...and this comes for selling and buying many things over the past few years here...is timing. I've put things in and never had a response. Re-post it a few weeks later and I get 4 or 5 people wanting to buy it. I've also gone through and looked at old adds, found something I wanted, emailed the seller and it was still available. I didn't look into what your asking and what they go for, so I can't comment on the price deal. Also, try lisitng it at the gear page, weber buy and sell, Les Paul forum and Harmony Central classifieds.

Whenever I sell something nowadays, I check Harmony and e-bait just to see what the 'current market' price is first. Sometimes something you think is worth a chunk on the auction block just isn't to everyone else. Then it comes down to, either hang on to the piece until the tide changes, or bite the loss and lower the price to what everyone's willing to pay. :( Also, for someone who's a fair distance away, a $200.00 savings would be eaten by the shipping and duties so... no one will essentially pay retail for a used guitar.

cool... thanks for the responses. It has been enlightening. I don't often see stuff so i just don't know. That is why i ask. I am not sure i would sell it if i had to go all the way down to like $400.00 That is dang near 60% what a paid for it. These are not cheap guitars. That is just too much of a hit. I expect to take a hit on it, but i didn't see my price was all that out of line with E-bay prices and i though that selling on TDPRI (and the Gibson page) would be easier since i am known here and ebay is so scam laden these days.
Anyway some really valid points here, including a few things i hadn't thought of so thanks.. i'll let if float out there and see if i get a bite, might come down on the price some more. I expected to have to go down in price some but i just wont give it away (unless it is to a friend). Live and learn .... or in this case, post and learn.... Thanks all.. -kp8-- |

I don't think your price...
....is outrageous, but it's a little toward the high side. Historical eBay sales ranged from the upper $300s range (!) to low/mid $500s. Not sure why this guy went so low on his "buy-it-now," but gives you the idea there are very good deals out there; there are holes from the tuner swap, but still...
MF is selling them for $730 shipped in the gig bag. Brand new w/warranty, and I can take 30 days to decide if I want it. I buy used all the time, and if I was in the market for one of these--or something similar--I might ask you if you'd go $525 shipped. If you said no, and I had other options, I'd probably say, "OK, thanx anyway..." I think it's silly that a lot of people here are saying this is a Tele page, and that's why there's no interest. Most people I "know" on this page, love guitars in general, and Tele lovers have particularly always dug p90 guitars. Good luck! -Eric

Take some good pictures of the guitar and put it on eBay. Put an optomistic buy it now, and protect the auction with an honest reserve. Make a reference to someone famous who played/plays this type of instrument...Angus Young maybe? Throw the word rare in there a time or 2 and let er go.
