Artie Shaw has passed.

"King of the Clarinet," veteran of eight (8!) marriages, groundbreaking musician and true iconoclast. There's a good obit in the Post here:

RIP Artie Shaw. – CS

Just heard it on ATC. I've always thought his playing was top notch, but more than that I thought he was one of the few bandleaders with artistic integrity. A real example of how to have commercial sucess without watering down the material. A great musician, who will be missed. As he requested:

"Artie Shaw 1910-2004: Go Away."

It is sad I guess, but man I hope I make it to 94. The man had a hell of a life, we should all be so lucky!

His comments and interview segments on Ken Burn's PBS "Jazz" series were a highlight.
A very interesting person.
