minidisc to CD-R transfer?

Hey,

I've been asked to transfer some music from a minidisc to CD. I am completely unfamiliar with minidisc. Is there an easy way to do this? I can burn CDs from my Windows machine, I just need to know how to get the files there!

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Unfortunately it is not as simple as uploading jpegs from a digital camera. Despite the recording format, for your purposes, a mini-disc needs to be thought of as a source of analog data.

You will need software on your PC such as 'LP Recorder' that creates .wav files from analog input, and the sibling product 'LP Ripper' that allows you to slice the recording into tracks. You will also need CD burning software.

The only hardware you will need, aside from a CD burner, is a lead with stereo miniplugs at each end. This is used to connect the mini-disc's headphone output to the soundcard's audio input.

The steps are as follows:

(a) create the .wav file by starting up LP Recorder, pressing the 'Record' button and then pressing the 'Play' button on the mini-disc.

(b) edit the .wav file into separate tracks using LP Ripper

(c) use the CD burning software to create a musical CD from the .wav files. (If you just copy the .wav files to CD, they will be readable on a PC but the CD will not work on a regular CD player.)

Feel free to PM iif you need more info.

There was thread on this about nine months ago started by Dana but I couldn't find it.

Robin,

I found Dana's thread (it's here, for reference).

I'll look into LP recorder.

I have a Zoom MRS-4 multitrack recorder (which records to a SmartCard). Would it be possible to simply plug the the MD player into the MRS-4 and record it as a .wav? I can then transfer the file from the SmartCard to my computer.

Thanks for your help!

Joe

Sorry can't help there. I'm not familiar with the MRS4. Is there an online manual at the Zoom website?

There are free trial versions of LP Recorder and Ripper that allow you to record up to four minutes.

I sometimes use Minidiscs for mastering.
Using the optical out option i can then record a CDRW in a Phillips cdrw machine which can be found quite cheaply secondhand......Your data will now be in a wav format on CDRW and will not be degraded as you have not left the digital domain. You can then copy the CD on your windows machine.
Hope this helps
