Greenday's New Album

I have a feeling most of you old folks don't pay much attention to bands like Greenday, but then again what do I know. So, I just picked up their latest album "american idiot" gotta say, it's pretty dang darned amazing. They have some crazy stuff on there, like 10 minute complilations of incomplete songs (kinda like the beatles), powerful slow ballads (boulevard of broken dreams), and some of their classic fun stuff. Just a "good music heads up". I'd be intrested to hear what you guys think of it.

Well, I thought the title was nearly perfect, they just forgot the s at the end of idiot. Seriously, there are a couple of catchy songs on it, but the title track really ticks me off - I don't need any political advice from Green Day...

interesting but true...

Catchy tunes from some much matured(?) dudes, they were playing so many of the album's tracks on KROQ Los Angeles' morning show when I was there this past summer I felt like I didn't have to go out and buy it...and enjoy it: I kinda became tired of a number of the tunes pretty quickly. Blame mainstream label promotion, whatever, they play Green Day several times a day, all day.

The curious thing is this, and I caught it right off the bat, distracting me from any song appreciation whatsoever. The 10-minute-epic "Jesus of Suburbia" quotes two tunes so STRONGLY it's a wonder few have seemed to notice. What's even stranger is the titles of the tunes quoted.

@ 2'30". Bryan Adams "Summer of '69": the "Sitting on your momma's porch..." part

@ 5'40". The Alarm "68 Guns": the "And now they're tryin to take my life away...etc" part

Hmmmm.....68 and 69. A code? Another song quoted in Green Day's tune which, I unaware, contains a "70" in it? Ummm...(help me out here) Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66? Okay, I'm just being silly. But I do find it odd...give a listen and dig around.

Old dude here(I'm 49), but since Green Day members have hit their 30s, I guess you can't trust them to pay attention either. They do seem to pay attention to the Clash, however, since they're still copping licks from Joe Strummer. Overall, a good "aging punk band" record.. I'll rate it 3 out of 5 stars within the genre.

I love it, and I had all but given up on Green Day. Its amazing to me that a "top 40" billboard band has the nuts to attack US politics and society. Amen!

I dont want to flame anyone, but I believe this country needs more political bands. This country is falling apart, its about damb time its been put into song. To each there own, but if someone does not like political music, or just doesnt like political music with a socialist message, then dont listen to it.

I like Green Day a lot

I had never paid any attention to them until I started giving guitar lessons to my drummers two kids. They both wanted to learn a Green Day song. Turns out I did as well! Good solid band, good musicianship and nice, tight tunes.
And I agree with dogcityrocker... should be more bands with messages. Being a product of the 60s I miss that aspect. All sorts of art has been used for various political and social expression since the beginning of time.

You can always count on Green Day to put out good, catchy, sing-a-long tunes.
They're not my favourite band, but I'll throw on their records every now and then when I'm driving.

I wasn't crazy about the American Idiot single (mostly because it got way overplayed), but right now I'm really digging Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Wellll, I really dig Green Day.

I didn't need religious advice from Nikki Six either, but I listened to "Shout at the Devil" a lot... :)

Anyway, Green Day always put out a record full of great riffs and sing-along tunes that just make you want to pump your fist. And, to me anyway, their lyrics are always clever.

I haven't had the new cd long, just got it on my birthday, but I really like it. Right now, I keep ffwding to 5:21 in track 2, "Jesus of Suburbia" to the little "Dearly Beloved" part of the song.
