You should post this in the "Make Me Laugh" thread.

Hmmm....

What Who related item (s) would actually be worth 5 mil? Maybe all of Pete's guitars, John's basses, Keith's drums and Roger's mics, throw in the original clothes from the 60's tours and all the original Marshall amps from the early days.. I think that might get me to crack the check book. :P

I don't care how much it sells for as long as that sicko Townsend doesn't profit from it.

i just used my calculator--I sure couldn't do it without one!--and 5 million bucks for 3100 items comes out to 1612.90 per item, most of which are books, record albums, and the like.

Dude, the charges were dropped, and for a reason. The guy was doing some ethically questionable research, but nevertheless he had already published writing on the subject, which the mainstream press failed to even acknowlege.

Townshend was a victim himself, and he's spent most of his life trying to recover from it. Now he's got a stain. I find it hard to reconcile that aspect of his life with my respect for him as a creator of art, but he's just a human being struggling with demons like the rest of us - we just don't all do it in the spotlight.

It's not a hot enough news item to report that the charges were dropped or that he's raised money and worked for over 2 decades for anti-pornography and anti-child abuse causes.

Sorry to belabor this any but Townsend freely admits to using pornography himself and has for years. He also freely admits that he sent money to those illegal porn sites for "research". If he weren't Pete Townsend he'd be in jail and everyone would be glad he's put away. The fact that he's a hero to some folks make these facts easy to overlook.

I agree with the earlier poster...

It might be worth a few million if you chucked in a few dozen of Townshend's guiars and Entiwistle't entire collection. I have a copy of the Ox's book Bass Culture and the guy had a collection to die for...one of the earliest 1950 Broadcasters, 51 P-bass (one of the first 5 electric basses made) 54 Strats, dozens of early Gretsches, all kinds of great early 60s Ricks (including one he said he "hijacked" from Manny music store in NYC before the intended buyer Roger McGuinn could get his hands on it(a late 30s Rick lap steel, 59 and 60 burst Les Pauls, and other treasures. Entwistle had a collection to rival Scott Chinery's. Anyone seen this magnificent book?

Now maybe if you toss that stuff it's worth that kind of money, but this guy has to be delusional. I have tons of Who stuff too but I'm not expecting it to fund my retirement account by any means!

As the first poster said, too, you should have posted this under Make Me Laugh. Thanks for the joke!

Those are facts Tim. I've not overlooked them at all. But I am willing to defend him on the grounds that the legal authorities let him go and based on his reputation of philanthropy. Only the authorities know the facts of the case. I don't think Townshend was right in doing what he did at all and his reputation is permanently wrecked. I don't blame you at all for the derision you have for the guy. But in the end there is more to it than both of us know. I'm done with this at this point. I just didn't want this to turn into "Townshend is scum/ No he isn't!". My apologies for dragging this out this long. ......How about buddy's $5 million dollar auction though eh? Surely he is just having fun with it.
