Listening / Mixing Audio System help

folks. i have always had pretty substandard audio system. Basically hand me down all in one Sony junk with some OK JBL bookshelf speakers.

I want something better that i can use for general listening AND a reference system for listening to band mixes.

I purchased some second hand Alesis monitors from a bandmate. got them cheap and i know they aren;t top of the line but pretty nice sounding. I bought off ebay a matching Alesis reference Power amp RA100.

i have a separet 5CD disk player already. How do I get a radio, tape player and even my computer to hook into this? something that i dont have to plug and unplug things. I guess some sort of preamp with tone shaping and a seletor for different items listed above.

thanks in advance. trying to keep it reasonable of course.

listening to band mixes

when we recorded a cd a couple years back the engineer
would do a general mix through his high end studio equipment which included these monitors which were tuned for a perfectly flat response, however before any final cut we would listen to the initail mixes through a cheep Ghetoblaster, the car tape deck or cd player , It was explained that most people listen to music in there car or on cheaper equipment if it sounds good in a car or on a little tapedeck the end product would be good , most people dont listen to music through perfectly flat response speakers in a very controlled studio environment.

i am aware that this dosent directly answer your questions but the point i am trying to make is that with todays technology i dont think one needs to spend a lot of money on high end audio equipment to listen to rock and roll unless of course there is a interest ih HIfi specificaly, i know some guys are really into it.

tks

thanks for the reply. you make valid points, but let me explain better.

i still check and listen to most music in my pickup truck with a stock stereo system. no subwoofer. CD player is a SOny Discman piped into thetape deck with the adapter. LOFI for sure. use my wifes car too. nothign fancy.

But we do a lot of self recording on midlevel gear. And i do some mixing on my PC. So I bought the monitors and reference power amp for that purpose.

Headphones aren;t good for mixing on.

But while I am at it I figure why not use this gear for regular audio listening as well. so thats why i am wonderin g how to interface a feww components together and get rid of my old handmedown Sony system. or at least demote it.
