bad graduation music
my girlfriend graduated from UNC-Asheville today with a distinction in literature. i'm pretty proud of her!
but man . . . when i graduate, they can mail me my degree. it will be quicker. we got there at 9 a.m. three horrible musical events and eighteen speeches later, they started handing out the degrees . . . all 600 of them . . . the first bad musical event was the singing of the alma mater. the singer sounded like a cross between an american idol and a southpark character. then there was a "choir" that "sang" a really hideous gospel song, "accompanied" by what sounded uncannily like a casio 3-octave keyboard. why is it graduation music is so bad? why can't they just get somebody up there with a tele and a DR and let us just enjoy the tone for awhile?

Graduation story
At my high school graduation, we had a fellow student who was somewhat of a child prodigy. He was to have played some classical piece, but, as Elvis Costello did, on SNL, he switched songs, in midcourse, and played a ripping version of "Bumble Boogie", instead.
They withheld his diploma, but he got a standing ovation and the everlasting appreciation of many of his peers for his talent, his sense of humor, and, most of all, for his very musical take on civil disobedience. |

I recall....
It was August 31st, Columbus OH. Yeah, it was hot and humid. My wife and I were both graduating. I didn't wanna go, because we were moving out the next day and there was still a lot stuff to do.
The problem: my in laws came all the way from Venezuela for the graduation and my wife decided that we would go. Some bozo had decided that the old basketball arena would be the perfect place to graduate 1200 people. Problem: It doesn't have air conditioning. The music wasn't that bad; you know, typical school band music. The speaker was some former senator and he would talk for almost an hour and man, IT WAS HOT! I'd bring a couple of water bottles but I wasn't enough. The worst part was that my in laws couldn't find a seat by our side, so they couldn't even see us. So, I agree Cooper. "Next time" (yeah, right) I'd get my diploma on the mail and on graduation day I would play my Tele during the whole ceremony at home with the air conditioning set at 68 F.
