Sumlin heart attack
Two players of such truly great magnitude that I think this deserves a mention here too:

Best wishes to both ......
I saw Gatemouth in the '80s. Great performer, and a treasure for sure. I've got several Gatemouth CDs. Pressure Cooker (recorded in Europe in the early '70s, re-released on Alligator) is my fave, and one of the best CDs in my collection. In fact, I think it needs another listen today .....
:-) I also really like his early stuff, especially The Original Peacock Recordings. I've not had the pleasure of seeing Hubert Sumlin perform, but I've enjoyed his playing on my many Howling Wolf CDs. A truly unique guitar voice, and a seminal player in the blues world. Here's wishing for a speedy recovery for both. Cheers, BK |

Tough news about two all time greats, and two of my favorites.
Hubert, though certainly highly regarded, I don't think gets near the credit he deserves for his contribution to the development of electric blues guitar. So many of his licks and concepts I hear (and try to play) all the time throughout the blues community. And in the interviews I've seen, he comes off as a really nice person, with such a sweet smile and disposition. And Gatemouth--what a phenomanal musician he is, singer, violinist, and of course guitarist. I've been lucky enough to see him live a couple of times. There's a DVD out now of him live at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans that's really worth picking up. And I have to mention how cool he is in the Freddie King "The Beat" video, a young feller leading the house band in fancy tux like suits, and sometimes playing a Rickenbacker. I wish them both the best. We're lucky to have them.

God be with both of these gentlemen right now....
Me and my wife had the extreme pleasure of seeing Hubert in Detroit a few years ago, and he was playing GREAT. He was such a true gentleman too. He invited us to his dressing room, and hung out with us during his break. I'd played in Pontiac the night before, and apparently someone told Hubert about me because at the end of his second show he was standing next to me in the men's room telling me how great I am!!! What a surreal experience - standing at a urinal, next to my childhood hero, and he's complimenting me!!! Hubert is one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. I hope and pray for his recovery, and his return to the stage. I've never had the pleasure of seeing Gatemouth Brown, but I do remember seeing him on a PBS show with Roy Clark many many years ago. He's always been great too. Prayers go out for him as well.

Any Updates?
Clarence is great and I was lucky enough to meet him. We opened for him in December of 2002 at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa where he played the firebird with the custom leather pickguard. Clarence and his band played on my band's gear. One of his band members (bass player?) was the tour manager and used my Blues Deluxe amp for Clarence. I only use the Blues Deluxe for harp, but he thought Clarence would be confused with my main guitar rig. He sounded good although not his usual tone.
After the gig we met up with him at Perkins and had breakfast together where he and the waitress playfully tormented each other. I'm not sure he knew we were his opening act or if he'd know who we were if we met him today. But what would you expect from a man now 80?

Sending good thoughts to them both.
Seen clarence once at houston Blues Festival 84 or 85.
Saw hubert several times up close, at antones in austin he was hanging out around the club around 1984, with Mel Brown. Great musicians.
