Magazine dedicated to Chicken-pickers.......
What I would give if there was a magazine along the lines of Guitar Player or similar that was dedicated to nothing but chicken pickers, old style country players, and new style guys like Brad Paisley, Jimmy Olander,
Brent Mason, etc.... While I really like some of the guitar magazines out there, it just gets a little old reading about Clapton, SRV, Hendrix, etc... and don't get me wrong, I love those guys and there accomplishments, well, not that big of a Hendrix fan, but the point is not to slam those types of players, but us hardcore honky tonk fans feel a little left out. I mean, how cool would it be to get your new issue of "Chicken Pickers Monthly" and see Red Volkart on the cover with a 7 page interview. So the big question is; How many of you would subscribe and if you did, who would you want to read about?

I would absolutely subscribe!
I'd be happy if it covered the whole thang - everything from Volkaert and Kirchen to Rich and Nichols! ... :D

There was a magazine called "Country Guitar"...published from about mid 1993 to 1995...quarterly and then bimonthly...a total of 11 or 12(?) issues...
Lots of good stuff...several accurate transcriptions in each issue...new country and old classics...and lessons..chicken pickin, steel licks, banjo rolls, etc. The mag also had artist profiles/interviews...with Dwight Youkum, Marty Stuart, Vince Gill (X2), The Eagles, etc... The magazine vanished in mid-1995. I was one of the subscribers and I think they still owe me a couple of issues...Issues will periodically show up on Ebay, and I recall someone said they were able to score a complete set of the issues... |

I loved "Country Guitar" magazine
I was very upset, but not surprised when it disappeared not long after I found it.
Apparently the only guitarists we should want to be interested in are Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Just check out the covers of every other "guitar" magazine. ugh-it's not my world. P.

kinda what I'm waitin' for sorta.....
I also want sections on the Geniuses that a lotta technotards dislike such as John Lee Hooker and
Cobain.....I saw some Seattle/NorthWest Guitar Vegetable on Television a couple of daze ago disrespectin' Cobain and I had to laugh at this TURKEY and his "licks".....20 years from now "The Turkey" might just maybe endup as an obscure footnote on some scholarly study on "Grunge"..... same old story: they take Alan Freed and stick us with Dick Clark..... I'd like to see in-depth studys of Merle Travis and Blind Blake's methods and of course someone with the wit and wisdom to do a monthly "Strictly Chet".

not happy, Jan
I had every edition of country guitar that came out i only have a couple now. there was a column by Brent Mason in at least one of them from memory...i was (and still am) mighty peeved they stopped it the only current magazine that has a regular country chickin pickin section that i can find is the English magazine Guitar Techniques which is usually quite a good column by Lee Hodgson unfortunately he tends to use a strat so his tone is a bit ordinary but he is a great player it comes with a CD and is quite good value...........

I bought several issues of Country Guitar, but I only have one now. I believe it's the inaugural issue. It has an article on chicken picking by Albert Lee and Danny Gatton, along with interviews with Vince Gill and Steve Wariner. It also has tabs to some songs that were popular at the time.
There was another magazine that came out right before Country Guitar that was a special issue of Guitar Player or something. As I remember it had tabs to Steve Wariner's "Crash Course In The Blues," Vince Gill's "Liza Jane," and maybe another hot picking tune. I looked at it in the store but for some reason didn't buy it. I've regretted it ever since. It's hard for me to believe it, but this must have been in '92 or '93.

Probably right Bob....
However, since I don't have a laptop computer, that's not much help when I need a little bathroom reading, ya' know?
But seriously, I'm aware that we are a niche market, but still, I'm just so sick of reading and hearing about the same guitar players time after time after time. Would do my big ole' heart some good just to see a few country pickers in these mags.

There is a market...........
Well, after reading all this, I sure do agree with the rest of you all. What is left to find out about all the same ole ROCKN'ROLL guitarists?
I used to subscribe to "Guitar Player", and got SICK of seeing all the punk rockers, the heavy metalists, and never getting to see Brent Mason or some of the chickin pickers on the cover! I love the Tele for what it stands for, and the Traditional sound it was designed for. Lets read about Don Rich, Albert Lee, Ray Flacke, Vince Gill, Brent Mason, Jerry Reed, Redd Volkart, ROY NICHOLS, James Burton, Phil Baugh, Glenn Campbell, Thumbs Carlisle, Danny Gatton, Pete Wade, and a whole bunch of guys I'll kick myself for forgetting in this catagory, and then there's another bunch that played with a fatter tone, but were DinoMite: Leon Rhodes, Eldon Shamblin, Grady Martin, Spider Wilson, Jimmy Capps, CHET ATKINS Tommy Alsup...There are sooooo Many Great ones out there! New guys, and Local heros:Tommy Nash, Rich O'Brien, Buddy Whittington, Clint Strong,... I met a Young kid in Nashville last year that I was very Impressed with by the name of Jason Roller, He was playin' on the road for Joe Diffy at the time. Boy What A nice young man, and a GREAT player! He wasn't tryin' to hog the show, he was fitting the songs as tastefull as could be. By the way, I just happened to think of another great guitar player that a lot of folks may not know. Terry Bethel is known to be a Terriffic pedal steel player (Mel Tillis, Loretta Lynn, Billy Joe Spears) But this cat can play some really great guitar too!

Funny thing is...
I'd say I'm more of a swing/blues/r&b guy, but I loved "country guitar" and would love to see something along those lines again.
I love good country guitar playing, and don't mind cross-pollinating my style with some tasty country color. P.

Another fan of Country Guitar here even though I only
had a few issues. If anyone ever does another hope they include pedal steel, dobro, acoustic, bass and rockabilly players. I like pedal steel player interviews especially. Really interesting stuff. |
