Wow. Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful. Time for me to be checking out Gov't Mule and Exile On Main Street and Peter Green, amongst others. I have the Beano album as someone suggested. I play it occasionally, but sometimes it gets too heavy and 5 minute solos become boring.. but thats just my opinion. Keep the suggestions coming!

Two words people: Gov't Mule !!!!!!!!! My oh my. THis is straying off the point slightly, as so many of my threads do, but can anyone recommend me a good starting place for Gov't Mule? Do they have a 'best of' album? As I type this I'm listening to 'Lola Leave Your Light On', and before that 'Rocking Horse'. Phew...

There's 2 phases IMHO to Gov't Mule.. the Allen Woody era - early stuff to about 2000, and the post-Allen Woody era. Personally, I'm most inclined towards the Allen Woody era stuff, and my favorite album from that time period is Dose.

One of my favorites is I Shall Return

Rory Gallagher was an outstanding blues-rock composer, guitarist and singer. He was particularly remembered by his live work.
For fun check any of his live DVDs (Live at Monreux, Live at Rockpalast, Live at Cork Opera House, and the great Irish Tour). For listening his "BBC sessions" and "Live at the Isle of Wight" are great.
Today, Joe Bonamassa and Davy Knowles (Back Door Slam) are a great to listen too and talk with respect of Rory

Since this is a Tele forum, these are two examples of Rory with Tele
Sinner Boy - Isle of Wight 1970

I could Have Had Religion - Live at Montreux 1994

But you should check what he did in between with his Teles and that Strat!

...it has been mentioned...

...Savoy Brown, and I love "Blue Matter"...Chris Youlden sings his arse off onnit!!!..."Train To Nowhere" and "(She's Got a) Ring in His Nose and a Ring on Her Hand"...Kim Simmonds holds forth on lead guitar...the second side is a live performance...love the record...

..."AB Skhy Blues Band" from the SF Bay Area has some nice funky things...

...find Elvin Bishop's "Big Fun" and "Don't Let the Bossman Get You Down" on Alligator,as he recorded some of the best licks he'd played in years on those records, believe me,as I was there watching him cut every one of those solos and fills...

...I'd also suggest you find all the Shelter label Freddie King recordings...most of them featured Leon Russell and the Shelter gang playing their arses off!!!...

I'd start with "Gov't. Mule" (first album), then "Dose" and "Life Before Insanity". Pretty much the be-all end all of the first iteration before Allen Woody died. "Live at Roseland" isn't much different from the first couple of albums because they cut those live in the studio, too. I'd ignore that one for now. "The Deep End" is a cool thing where they brought in a bunch of the best bass players to fill Woody's shoes. Still sounds like the Mule but with a clear bass player sound to each song. "Rising Low" DVD is a gem, chronicling these albums (2) and the only disappointment is that it's not full songs, just a documentary--but very interesting and often funny. "Deja Voodoo" is great, too. I don't have the new album yet but what I've heard at mule.net is consistent with the usual high quality. Warren Haynes is one of the best. Funny, he's considered a great slide player but you really don't hear all that much of it in GM. It's all worth having. Much to discover and don't miss www.mule.net with lots of info, tracks.

Check this out:

Here's a master bluesman playing what I would classify as rock and roll. In 1935.

Blues. Rock.

Firstly, my thanks to kelnet for listing those - please don't tell me you typed all of those out, and that you copy and pasted? I would feel very bad if i thought you'd gone to the trouble of typing all those out! Anyway with regards to Govt Mule I think I'll start with Deja Voodo because it has the track Lola Leave Your Light On on it...
