My early Christmas prezzie . . .

from my daughter... She's 13.

P1020039.jpg

She used my avatar pic as her inspiration.
I don't know how well the detail will show on screen, but she really captured my usual blank look of concentration with very few strokes...

Ya’know what – she has something here she should consider developing. Her body part proportions are off (which is quite normal) but she’s got a good grasp of underlying structure – in this case the skull. She recognizes the brow ridges, orbital sockets, jaw/masseter muscle delineation – darn good sense of facial structure overall for a 13 yo – Nose, lips, chin. And she did a nice job with the hair. She struggled with the ¾ view with the left side of the face/brow area but this just iteration and something some artists struggle with into adulthood.

I believe anybody can learn to draw through iteration but must first learn to develop how to "see". Those who might be considered “gifted” or "talented" are better at seeing their subject, identifying the important lines, areas of dark/light regions and recreating it before them. She's got talent.

For her Christmas get her a few sheets of thick textured black paper (something 80lbs+ which will take some abuse) and a few white colored pencils - if she likes working with charcoal then get chalk. She can work in the negative and draw in the areas of light. Excellent for subjects with black backgrounds.

I can sense all of you, "It's just a blotch of black paint on a white canvas" guys rolling your eyes.

For this she used graphite pencil and acrylic on a "canvas".

Thanks PixelMover: she is very keen and has been drawing for a couple of years, but no lessons as such. I'll take on those suggestions.

Thank you all for the kind comments.

That's freakin' awesome. I'd be so proud. Like Pixel Mover said, the talent and potential displayed here is enormous. Such a cool gift.
