Paul Rodgers and Brian May

I have always loved Free. They were the essence of raw rock.
I never had fully appreciated Paul Rodgers vocals until I saw this clip.
He is not only an incredible writer and singer, but he has that quality of
just owning the stage.
Brian May plays the leads on this.
Enjoy.

Ah, the Stratpack DVD. Best $10 bucks I ever spent. Got it on special from JB HiFi.

Anyone who doesn't own this already, grab it!

http://www.amazon.com/Strat-Pack-Liv.../dp/B00081U6EG

So many classic moments. Amy Winehouse looking young and healthy. Gary Moore finally finding the right mic the third time around, then turning straight around and turning his amp up to 11. Albert Lee's Country Boy, Teresa Anderson. It's just the best DVD I own I think. Freakin awesome.

I wonder if Paul Rogers sang "HotBlooded"? Don't think so but it sure sounds like him. Have to look that up. Yeah, the dude can sing.

Paul Rodgers rules all. I love this version with the backup singers.

Last year I watched the Queen+Paul Rodgers concert on PBS. I was skeptical, who could possibly fill Freddy Mercury's shoes?!?! I was more than impressed. I plan to get the DVD of that concert for my collection. Great rock singer, with grit and class!

I saw Queen during that tour and Rodgers did a great job.
He just sang 'em his way and didn't try to do a Mercury inpersonation.

Hot Blooded? That was Foreigner with Lou Gramm. My brother says they sound alike too

Dang, Brian's tone really meshed well with that song. Especially those opening chords. Very cool.

I was truly impressed with his stage presence. In the 70's he stood and sang, now he puts the crowd in the palm of his hand. Very Cool.

I always have (and still do) love Free and early Bad Company music.

I bought the Strat Pack dvd a few years ago and was very disappointed in it - it just felt like it was totally lacking in atmosphere. And why was Amy Whitehouse there - or Jamie Cullen?? Or indeed Brian May and Paul Rodgers?

None of them have any connection to playing a strat, have they? Paul Kossoff played a Les Paul on All Right Now so why include that song in this concert?

Paul Rodgers is a fantastic singer but seeing his performance here - and on another Bad Company dvd that I bought many years ago - really put me off him. When he was in Free and Bad Company he was a fantastic front man but in a much more understated but still powerful way - nowadays, to me anyway, he comes across as a parody of his former self.

Strangely enough, I normally hate Gary Moore's tone and 100 miles an hour playing but his version of Red House is, for me, the highlight of this dvd!

As a tribute to the strat and its importance to the music of the last 50+ years I felt that this dvd and concert was a very poor way to celebrate it. No Clapton, Knopfler, Trower, Cray, Jimmie Vaughan to name just a few........

Conversely, the film and book, 'Contours, Curves and Body Horns' that was produced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the strat was a great piece of work.

I thought Brian May was there to pay tribute to Hank Marvin, one of his heroes. As I recall, Brian did play a strat for part of the concert.

You could well be right - I haven't watched this dvd for a long time. But the point is that he isn't normally associated with the strat - whether he plays one at this concert or not. So, to my mind, he wasn't necessarily the right person to be on the bill. I'd have expected the organisers to get people on board - like Dave Gilmour - who are best known for actually playing the strat for a big chunk of their career.

And I don't disagree that Paul Rodgers is still a great singer. I just don't care for his stage presence these days. A bit too showy for my tastes - and not what he was all about in his heyday. (And what the heck were his kids invited up to play/sing for at this gig?)

I like Paul Kossoff's guitar tone on the original and on the live versions I've heard with him playing.

Paul Kossoff and Peter Green are the only 2 players who's tone would inspire me enough to get a Les Paul and try to replicate them! Even Clapton's Les Paul tones don't get close to these guys.

Is it the toupee?

He's got a great voice, but I've always found his songs to be rather banal -- even the ones I like. I saw a video of the Rodgers-Queen show and I found it to be labored and forced. The Queen contingent looked tired and Rodgers was a bad fit for the band. Perhaps if they had changed their named to Rough Trade it would've come off better.

Paul, wow. He has a great bar band voice, and I mean that as a huge compliment. Killer Diller.

That's funny because since he joined Queen I've alway thought that Queen went from being one of the best bands in the world to a bad bar band (that's not a compliment)

Err, that makes it apparent that you haven't seen it for a long time because Gilmour WAS there...

Check him out here.

I guess the dye was cast when this performance was done.
