John Mooney (as usual). If anyone can, tell him to come back to Crawfish Fest (Sussex NJ) please.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a celebration of all the folk arts that have sprung from American culture.
It's a long, wide, diverse and continuous stream.
New Orleans is the geographical center... the well spring.

We did Jazzfest in '93, and I did enjoy it. But I was madder'n'ell when we were told that the hotel room rates all TRIPLED for Jazzfest. I don't care who they sign up, I will NEVER go again.

In the time I lived there, it went from a louisiana heritage, jazz, and gospel, with a few national acts to way too many national acts that have nothing to do with music from Louisiana or New Orleans. On the Upside, I did get to see Lionel hampton just burn, burn, burn in the jazz tent.

look at the whole lineup, there's still jazz at the fest. lots of good stuff...and some stuff i wouldn't want to see too, but come on, it's a BIG festival...I think they do a pretty good job at keeping it diverse...

and hopefully no one will call the police if the music isn't jazz enough for them.

Most folks I've heard from after the show is over complain that the jazz wasn't good enough; there's a lot of it if you know the nature of the local artists.

One thing definitely missing is cheese music, and the cheesy end of the jazz spectrum.

The cold truth is the festival was struggling, in big trouble financially until they changed their promotion strategy completely. Some say the old template Jazz and Heritage Festival would be extinct at this point, post Katrina, had the overhaul not be done.

One thing I like is a de-emphasis on lighting, on choreography, on the digital aspects of music as opposed to playing real instruments. And I love the idea of sampling 5-15 minute segments of an artist I wouldn't have the inclination to pay to see as the exclusive fare. Found some neat musicians that way.

And for those of you who are into atonal types of performances, there's always Darius Rucker.

I'm not happy with how high hotel rates have been in New Orleans for decades. But, I think you were sold a bill of goods. I don't think rates as a whole rose very much if at all most years for Jazz Fest. If you paid triple, I am sorry. Prices were often highest during Mardi Gras, but by and large good New Orleans accomodations weren't cheap in 1971.
