Public School Food

It may be wise to allow your child to pack a meal on days when the school menu is questionable.

Is Fox crying wolf again? I wonder what the real story is. If there is one.

Here's a nice little slice of history, though: In the Spanish American war, more U.S. servicemen died from bad meat that the Army knowingly bought from Armour (who couldn't unload it anywhere else) than from combat.

I don't know who's worse sometimes, these "News" channels or the idiots who watch them.

"Spent hens"? What's wrong with a chicken that spent its days laying eggs? Sure they are a little tough - but it's perfectly healthy meat.

My only wish is America would leave their moronic "News" channels in America, even if they are owned by an Australian!

I go to public school. The food sucks due to all the "eat healthy" crap.

Before, it tasted good, AND was bad for us. Now it just tastes like a$$ AND is bad for us.

Weird, but I LOVED the food at my school growing up.

-Fresh baked rolls, 5 cents each, good Chili, and the best was their mexican pizza's called Fiestadas. My hats off to the lunch ladies of the Campbell County Schools, during the 80's.

hahaha! it's all "for your own good"! i went from school food to college cafeteria food to Army chow, and it was pretty much the same all the way along. it wasn't until i went to Third World countries that i realized crappy food is better than none. as Bob Marley said, a hungry man is an angry man!

Why eat at a school cafetaria anyway? A homemade lunch is cheaper and can be as healthy as you want. And it only costs 5 minutes to make.

"Boy, the food at this place is really terrible."

"Yeah, I know; and such small portions."

I had lunch the other day with our school principal in the cafeteria. It was pretty noisy, and people kept talking to me, so I didn't notice what he was doing at first. I looked back at him, though, and couldn't believe what I saw: he'd lined up peas along the blade of his knife, and he was shoveling them off that, into his mouth, with the side of his fork.

I was so embarassed I dropped a whole handful of mashed potatoes.

The only thing I liked was the pizza and the stick of cheese that came with the celery cup. School food SUCKED - no wonder there's so many Boomers with health issues.
Of course those 20 cent burgers from the 60's had NUTHIN' but healthy stuff in 'em.
yeah right

I'm sooo old - I remember when Tab actually tasted decent.
Then they took out the cyclamates...

Because lots of kids get free (subsidized) lunch.

Even if they can afford to send a home made lunch, many parents take the free route (based solely on my own personal experience), I suppose because it's free.

+1

LOTS of kids, and that's true for breakfasts, too. For many of them it's the only decent meal of the day, and school is the warmest, safest place they know.

Schools would rather your students BUY lunch there....they make a PROFIT on it. I'm in the school construction industry and have some good knowledge on this fact. Many schools in my region subcontract out the food service to mega catering companies that specialize in "school food" (aka thaw, heat, serve garbage). The school districts bid out the contracts and then they are pretty much hands off - the sub contractor uses the school's kitchen, hires their own staff and supplies the "food". It's all about money...I laugh at my son's menu when I see a hot pretzel with cheese as the entree ?! Or limiting oven baked french fries to once a month - but they have peas/carrots or mixed veggies every day...and they all go straight to the trash bins. Follow the $$$ and you'll see the answer. Only a small sector of the public schools in my region maintain their own kitchen & staff. Oh and the bigger schools opt for the Food Court concept - multiple areas to serve pizza/deli/burgers/hot entree/salads - just like the malls...these are BIG money makers for the subcontracted food service provider...

Growing up, I never ate a school lunch. I brought a sandwich and piece of fruit in a brown bag every single day from k-12. When I went off to college, the food was so bad that I literally lived on Captain Crunch, salad bar and the occasional slice of pizza in town when I could afford it.

Again, that depends on where you're living. In my country school lunches are not very common, most kids bring their own.

The whole time I was in school the food was bad. With the budgets most public schools have I'm suprised they haven't started handing out Ramen noodles and a spork.

Well, I guess the thread doesn't really apply to you or citizens of your country, does it?

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

My point was that I think that a homemade lunch has several advantages over a school provided lunch. I don't think it has anything to do with where someone lives.
