Bachman and Turner reunite!
Bachman Turner will roll on down the highway again in 2010 -- without the Overdrive.
The Bachman-Turner Overdrive principals Randy Bachman and Fred Turner have reunited to record the title track of Bachman's next album, "Rock 'n' Roll is the Only Way Out," which the guitarist describes to Billboard.com as "really rootsy, really AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, really fun, eager, hungry rock 'n' roll. It sounds like we're in our 20s again." Bachman and Turner plan to announce details of the album's release, which is expected next fall, as well as tour plans at a press conference Dec. 8 in Winnipeg, where both men reside. They won't be joined by the rest of their bandmates, however; drummer Rob Bachman (Bachman's younger brother) and guitarist Blair Thornton have filed suit to prevent the duo from using the BTO name. But Bachman said that won't prevent he and Turner -- who are reportedly considering monikers such as Bachman-Turner or Bachman-Turner United -- from working together. "We've been getting offers for the last five or six years," says Bachman, who served three separate tenures in BTO. "It started in 2000, with the reunion of the Guess Who. I went to see the Eagles, and the first thing Don Henley and Joe Walsh said was, 'How's Turner? Any chance you guys will do anything?' 'Why are you interested?' 'You're the last band of the '70s that hasn't gotten back together or put something out, that's why!' Mick Jagger said the same thing when we played the SARS show in Toronto (in 2003). So we'll see what happens when my CD comes out; the first cut people are gonna hear is this cut with me and Fred singing." Bachman says he and Turner had been in contact for awhile before he presented the "Rock 'n' Roll is the Only Way Out" track to him. "I said, 'Fred, pick whatever vocal line you want and scream your head off, just like the old days...The guys recording it called me and said, 'We can't believe this. This is the greatest thing ever.' When I got the track and played it, i was like, 'Holy cow, no one has heard anything like this since the '70s. It's amazing." Bachman -- whose album also includes appearances by Neil Young and the late Jeff Healey -- adds that since then Turner has given the guitarist a few of his songs to possibly work on as well. During its run BTO sold an estimated 20 million albums worldwide, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974 with "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and also scored Top 40 hits such as "Takin' Care of Business," "Roll On Down the Highway," "Hey You" and "Let It Ride." Fred Turner, one of the greatest, unsung rock vocalists.

Sad that his own brother won't be a part of it or let him use the BTO name...

In case you didn't know, and even if you did know, Randy Bachman has a radio show on the CBC called "Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap". Each show has a theme like music to be played at your funeral. He's also dedicated shows to the Strat, the Tele, even the cow bell! Part of the fun of the show is that it's recorded ny Randy and his wife in his home and in between tracks Randy noodles on his guitar and tells stories.

I have a video of the reunited "Not Fragile" lineup playing a concert at Manitoba Prison circa 1987. It's great stuff.
The Guess Who's performance at the SARS benefit is suprisingly good, too, and Randy Bachman looks great. He went from being the fat guy in the band to being the thing guy in the band. I hope he's kept the weight off since then.

Tim Bachman has a band locally, and is a realtor in my neighbouring town.

Great to see 'em getting a new album out. BTO always put on a good rock show.
Remember them wearing hockey jerseys when I saw them. Blue Collar is a fave cut from their early album, and really stood out from their rockers. |

I dug'em when I was a kid....
my brother and I still refer to seeing pimped out stuff as "silver vette with gold wheels" Even elvis dug BTO. I saw them on a bill once with Jo Jo Gunne, Bob Seger, Doobs & BTO.... the sky was green I tells ya! That was a bunch of distorted guitar.. Randy played a white strat (big paddle neck) and his 'trick' was playing with a drumstick.... I think the tickets were 5.50 at the good ol long beach arena.... I can't remember exactly how we got home, but I do think buses were involved. Randy's bio by John Einarson is a good read... A couple of years ago I was riding pretty high and Randy's old house in Washington State with the studio was on ebay... we put in a bid, but didn't get it... it would have been cool! The fact that he's kept Lenny Breau's name out there all these years tells me he's a pretty good guy...

Cool! BTO II was the first album I bought with my own money. I still crank Let It Ride when I hear it while driving!

Getbent, I think I saw probably that same tour except it was Charlie Daniels, Bob Seger (unknown at the time, playing Beautiful Loser stuff), J. Geils Band and BTO in Seattle in '75. I believe the Bachman house in WA was in Sedro-Wooley (sp?) wasn't it? My dad helped build a house up there for one of the members. I just remember that the owner insisted that the fireplace be able to burn 7' logs. Now who the hells turn is it to put another log on the fire. BTW, the singer and bass player from Jo Jo Gunne have a band centered in Austin called the Dead Pyrates Society that I really like. sounds a lot like classic Stones.

that sounds like an awesome show... JGeils was a great band back then! Magic Dick! "first I look at the purse" "homework" oh yeah!
Jay Ferguson was in Jo Jo Gunne too... I remember my dimwitted friend asking me "which one is Jo Jo?" I think you are right about the location of the house... it was really cool, but really dated too... Poor Seger... always the first band! people booed and threw stuff for no reason at all... I was happy for him when he finally made it... he earned thats fo sho! We used to go to Didneyland all the time (growing up in Anaheim) and I remember we met two girls from Michigan (we'd go to dance and meet girls, I have some fairly funny didney stories...) anyway they were huge saggy bob fans... and so we were already interested... he had most of the guys from the live album on those tours... I always thought drew abbot was awesome... this is before Bob really could play...

Here's one of their later tracks I like, even though the lyrics are a bit goofy in places.

There was a good BTO concert filmed at some US prison long ago on CBC; what a great hard rock band in concert. I think they were collectively heavier than Mountain in the day ... body-wise.
And Randy's patter and selection of music on CBC turned out to be a good show .. replacing Finkleman's 45s .. something that we listened to every Saturday night up north. It just made the campfire more comforting. Also, Randy sold his collection of Gretsch guitars to Gretsch for their new museum after the fire. I've got a lot of respect for the man. He's no jerk off.
