The Merits of the 60's/70's Era
I had made a comment in the Reagan thread about the 60's and my point of iew on the times. A responder said to me that his recollection of the times and mine were differant. I thought that would be an interesting discussion. The merits and detriments of the times.
The Good: The Music The Civil Rights Movment The Bad: Drugs The increase in STD's and unwed mothers. I'm sure I could go on, but what do those of you that were there remember and what would you say is the Legacy of that gneration? ( course they say if you were "Really" there you cant remember) |

Most significant, the era spawned a large group of indepedent thinkers who stopped blindly believing whatever our 'leaders' wanted people to believe. It was also a time when anything seemed possible - it's been how many years since we were on the moon???
On civil rights, I feel like young people almost made it and music plus the war were major unifying forces, but keep in mind there were big regional differences. I was in an integrated band in the late 60s and we encountered few problems playing the upper midwest, Canada, etc. In '69 we played both the Atlanta & Texas outdoor pop festivals and although we had no problems once there, getting to and from those gigs was a real eye-opener for me. Regarding sex & drugs, those have always been with us, what changes is how far the subjects are swept under the rug...
