Black Friday?

Just wondering...when was "Black Friday" invented? I'd NEVER heard of it until a year or two ago and then all of a sudden BANG it was everywhere. I know the day after Thanksgiving was always a "big" day to go out and spend money (what a weird tradition....) but when did the moniker and the hype arrive?

Don't know when, but so many retailers depend on the holiday sales to move their business from operating in the RED (loss) to the BLACK (profit).

Don't know, Don't care, and won't be going out to do a dang thing.

I'll be home wrenching on the Mercedes and putting lights on the house.

I've been wondering whether, in this rocky economy, this year it won't be more like "Black a Week From Next Thursday," or "Black (we hope) Next Year" for a lot of retailers. I know we're not planning much under the tree.

Seriously. Can we all agree to do our best to not kill anyone this Friday? Or better yet, do your shopping online.

It's also the day when the golf courses here in Florida are packed with the once a year hacks. Nothing like a 6 hour round.

I thought Black Friday was a bizarre take on Black Monday when the Market crashed in 1929.

Maybe it is after 8 August 1918 which Ludendorff called "the Black Day of the German army"?

Worked a Black Friday a few years ago. Worked it at Toys'R'Us. Everybody works on Black Friday at ToysRUs. I did night stocking, and we shoved new stuff in just about every nook and cranny, to the point where I thought we'd never sell 'em all. Most of those nooks and crannys were empty by the evening.

I check the ads. If anything truly mind-blowing is out there, I'll spend the evening waiting for it.

I'm not willing to get into the parking lot hassle even before I get into the store. I've seen some things I would like to get but it just isn't worth it, 32" 1080 HDTV at Target for 246.00 sounds good. I can only imagine what I would have to go through to get one.
Seems to me waiting and being safe is a better idea.

You'd better be first in line for an advertised special like that. Usually, the store will only have 5-10 of them, just to get people in the store.

I was just talking about this a few moments ago with my better half.

I was watching Andy Rooney do his thing on 60 Minutes the other night and he was yapping on about Thanksgiving and how special it was because unlike Christmas it wasn't mired in commercialism!!! What?

Here in Canada Thanksgiving is (for the time being) a non-commercial holiday and I'm very grateful for that.

.
Well, technically, Black Friday is after Thanksgiving, and it's come to be what it is because it's considered to be the first day of the Christmas shopping season. So it's really part of the Christmas commercialism. Thanksgiving is still about the good old fashioned core value of gluttony.

Can't say exactly when it got the name "Black Friday" but I think it's called that because it's the day retail stores get out of the red and into the black.

I thought came from the Wall Street Crash. Wikipedia reckons Black Thursday, October 24, 1929 was called Black Friday in Europe because of the time difference.
