Home Theater Help

My DVD player in my Pioneer HT in a box went bellyup after three years. Kinda p.o.ed that I now need to replace the DVD player, though the receiver is still working. Thinking of just spending the cash and going all component.......but I don't even know what is good anymore.

Question: What is the best bang for the buck in component HT receivers, progressive scan dvd, and while I'm at it a 5 speaker + powered SW package?

I picked up a Sony Dream system for about $400 that is great. They have systems from $350 to $1000+, so which system is right for you is your call, but I've been very happy with the Sony electronics I've used.

I got mine from www.crutchfield.com, and I highly recommend their service and shipping. Their prices are very competitive as well.

Remember all that buzz here couple months ago about a cheap great-sounding CD player? Well the $69 Toshiba SD-3960 is also an excellent DVD player with progressive scan. (I gave up on the $59 SD-3950 after returning 2 of em). I didn't expect the Tosh to be my main DVD player, but now it is. Best Buy carries it.

That's all I can specifically suggest, but there seems to be a countless good HT gear choices these days from the usual suspects. I'd look for terrific deals on close-outs.

I bought a 6.1 Yamaha receiver that's being discontinued (HTR-5640) for $199 from J&R music world. It's sounds great and it's got more than enough power. It replaced a Sony that crapped out on me. I did some research after it began giving me trouble and found that the Sony doesn't have a such a great rep any more when it comes to receivers.
