Electric Sitar In Soul Music

It's a sound I feel like I've heard a lot. Although only one example comes to mind.

Does anybody know more about the history of the electric sitar-guitar in soul music?

taking the term soul loosely here are a few exapmles... i'm sure reggie young played sitar on a bunch of soul records but these are the first ones that come to mind with reggie on them... the first track is jerry kennedy and not reggie young... it was atlantics jerry wexler that sent chips moman and reggie young at american studios the sitar that ended up on so many great records... (hooked on a feeling by bj thomas and the games people play by joe south are probably the most famous examples...) for sure many memphis, detroit and philly records had electric sitar on them...

Maybe not a real sitar, and maybe not pure soul, but still with a lot of soul.

Stevie Wonder: "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours"

Prince and the Revolution: "Around The World In A Day"

I've always wanted to cover "Band of Gold", what a great song.

Not "soul" per se (how exactly does one describe Steely Dan?!) - but one of my fave recorded electric sitar bits is the Denny Dias ride on "Do It Again" from SD's first record, Cant' Buy A Thrill.

The sitar portion of last night's show (my partner never seems to tire of introducing me as 'Bubba Shankar' whenever I don the Jerry Jones "Coral"):

Norwegian Wood
Paint It Black
Games People Play
Heart Full of Soul

Regardless of genre, it's a really unique sound, a very effective way of delivering a hook, and let's face it, not a sound that folks are accustomed to hearing in bars, so it definitely tweaks some ears. I'm tossing around some hook ideas with it for an album project I'm involved with.

...Lee Dorsey's recording...

...of "Give It Up"...go to youtube and type in a search for "Give It Up Lee Dorsey" (you're free to cut and paste),and you'll hear a Coral sitar up front and proud just after the piano intro by Allen Toussaint...

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

Wow, thanks for posting that! I wasn't aware of this band. I love his tele bass with the eagle feathers hanging off it. I wonder if I could pull that off...

Unfortunately it sounds like somebody relaid the studio version audio of this song over a live video. Don't see no sitar or fiddle section for that matter.
