Have you guys ever heard of Led Zeppelin? WOW!

That sounds silly but I've said that at least a thousand times to my friends within the past two weeks.

Our band does this show every year called The Tonic Ball. It's a charity event that spreads over 30 national and regional bands onto two stages - two artists are chosen and each band does two songs by whichever artist is assigned to their stage.

Tickets are something like $30, and it's always a total madhouse, but it's always a great time for a great cause.

This year we're headlining the Led Zeppelin stage. ...I'd never listened to Led Zeppelin in my entire life (not for any certain reason though), and now I'm a huge fan. I'm absolutely blown away by that bass player - holy mackerole!!! - and that drummer was a maniac!!!

We're doing "Hots on For Nowhere" and "We're Gonna Groove" tonight - both of which our bass player is doing on a gut stringed upright bass ha! - and I'm so excited about it.

Next time you guys talk about how great a band is.....I'm going to listen. Even if it's not something I'd typically listen to.....I'm going to trust you!!!

Cool, it's always good to discover a band you never listened to before. I'm a big Zep fan and I agree, their rhythm section was the key to their sound. Both were monster players. John Paul Jones was a really good keyboardist in addition to being an exceptional bass player. A friend of mine's son, who is a killer jazz drummer just discovered Bonham and was blown away. Keith Moon may have had the flash, but Bonham was like a machine.

Been listening to them since they started. Get the DVD set too.

I'd like to hear your band do some Led Zep.

Hey Mandy. I highly recommend the first two Led Zep albums. If I'm not mistaken, Jimmy Page played a telecaster on those two. Awesome stuff.

Hey there's this cool guitar on the market called a Stratocaster! Dude! You're not gonna believe how cool it is. I hear its perfect for surf music...that's a new music thang that's sweeping the West Coast right now.

In the late 70s/early 80s, Led Zeppelin represented the past. If you were into punk or any kind of modern music (or retro music like rockabilly), you hated arena rock bands and referred to them as "dinosaur rock". Led Zeppelin was hated even more than a lot of other bands because of all the hype surrounding them. During the 70s, it was almost sacreligious to say anything bad about them... so they probably got more than their fair share of hate a few years later.

I always liked their more rockin' songs like Communication Breakdown and Rock and Roll, but it was years before I could listen to a lot of their music. Now I like most of it, but I had to make an effort to get past my predudices about the music. I have to say I still think some of it is boring and pretentious... and I still find the movie The Song Remains The Same impossible to sit through.

You've never listened to Led Zeppelin? That's crazy! Well, you certainly chose two great songs to perform. I'd love to hear how they turn out!

FYI, John Paul Jones (LZ's bassist and all around musical genius) is now touring with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) as Them Crooked Vultures. I just got their newly-released album and I think it's awesome. I could draw all kinds of parallels between them and Led Zep. It's all funky, groove-heavy rock with some 'mystical' sounding forays into other genres. Josh Homme can do no wrong! Plus he plays much of this on a Tele!

Anyway good luck with the gig. Sounds like great fun.

Honeydrippers - Jailhouse Rock

Rockpile, Robert Plant - Little Sister

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - When The Levee Breaks

Actually, he used a Tele for the first album, then used the Les Paul mostly after that (including Zep II). Of course throughout his career he'd use guitars other than the LP for certain tunes.

I was into them in grade school (my older bro had all their records - yes, records, made of black vinyl), then in high school I had to start hating them when I got into punk - I think it was on page 4 of the Punk Rock Rule Book or something.
They're a great band, and it's great that you can hear them with 'new' ears. I guess you were never inundated with them on mainstream radio, and didn't get sick of them.
They have their pretentious moments, but that was the times I guess (before my time). They have some great rockers too, and you can learn the blues format from them.
If you like Robert Plant from that time, try Jeff Buckley (90s singer/tele slinger) too, he also does a nice falsetto thing.

Led Zeppelin.

Let's see... they were popular when I was in Junior High School, with gems such as this one:
You need coolin', baby, I'm not foolin',
I'm gonna send you back to schoolin',
Way down inside honey, you need it,
I'm gonna give you my love,

Wanna Whole Lotta Love eerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnngh (x4)

You've been coolin', baby, I've been droolin'

Way down inside, I'm gonna give you my love,
I'm gonna give you every inch of my love

Way down inside... woman... You need... love.
Seventh and eighth grade virgin boys thought that was pretty hot stuff. "Way down inside... I'm gonna give you every inch of my love..." <snicker, snicker, wink, nudge>

There was also a reggae band with an Elvis empersonatore lead vocalist named Dred Zeppelin. The lead singer's name was something like Tortelvis.

I don't know... I seem to recall several worst ever guitar solo threads on TDPRI, and many of them are by Jimmy Page...

Greatest band their ever was.

I once read that Page's Telecaster was single handedly responsible for the sale of a "buttload" of Les Pauls. A funny way of putting it, but the more I listen carefully to Zep albums the more I realize Jimmy used his telecaster often! And really, why wouldn't he?

Jimmy Page is then man, and is the single purpose I even play the guitar, the only reason I bought a Les Paul, and like 90% of the reason I bought a Tele!

Edit -> OH MY GOD I want a Jimmy Page Telecaster now. Seriously, I've never wanted one before, but now I'm jonesing bad. That pic is so beautiful!

You've seriously never listened to Led Zeppelin? Glad you're giving them a shot - and glad to hear you're digging it. Kind of funny and kind of cool that you are just now discovering them - I'd love to see your band's versions of those songs. Have fun.

Yep, great effing album. The best I've bought in years. The song structures are insane, so many time-signature changes.

It's a reminder that rock hasn't died....

Ever notice that Zepplin's "The Crunge" is an homage to James Brown's "Sex Machine"?

That reminds me of a clip I saw of Phil Spector in the 1960's on some TV show. The host was making fun of a tune by one of his girl groups like the Ronettes, by reading the lyrics out loud to the audience, hoping to expose how inane they were. While the lyrics were being read, Spector tapped out the beat of the song on a table and calmly said, "You're missing something....the beat." He made his point.

The same can be said for Zeppelin and really most great groups at one time or another. For many (most) bands, the lyrics don't stand up on their own, but they're only window dressing if the band is cooking, as Zeppelin usually was.

Ohhh, Mandy, better duck now... my gf (who's arguably the biggest Zep head I've ever met-she even LIKES Jimmy Page's Outrider CD) is registering to this board as I type this...

Mandy you's got some 'splain to do!!!

Seriously, it's really cool to "get" music that you didn't bother to listen to before-heck, I've gotten to where I like Hank Williams almost as much as Hendrix...

Good luck on the gig, Mandy!!!
