Easy Slide Tunes?
Hi all.
So, yesterday I tuned m' Squier Custom II to open G. Got myself a glass slide that actually fits for once, but now i need some tunes to play. I've tried and am still trying to master Led Zeppelin's version of Travelling Riverside Blues but is there anything slightly easier, but still just as fun? If I had possession over judgement day seems like good fun but looks quite difficult. So your input is valid and needed, as ever. Incedentally, i shut my middle finger in the car door today. My left hand. I CAN DO VIRUALLY NOTHING!!!! Playing guitar especially. My middle finger is now my slide finger for the moment. But this is hugeky irrelevant. Slide tunes please.

Something from your fellow countrymen:
'Jigsaw Puzzle' by the Rolling Stones. Very simple, any you can play the chords with the slide.

SHake Your Moneymaker by Fleetwood Mac - can't be beat for a great slide tune.
Any Elmore James album will be full of relatively easy material for you to jam along to. But try some Ry Cooder as well and make sure to try using standard tuning as well. It makes you play in a more lyrical way instead of the more rhythmic slashing style that tends to be used when in open tunings.

For Open G (or Open A) stuff check out:
Muddy Howlin Wolf Robert Johnson Son House Johnny Winter Mick Taylor Lowell George Bonnie Raitt Lee Roy Parnell For Open D (or Open E) check out: Elmore James Hound Dog Taylor Johnny Winter Duane Allman Bo Ramsey Advanced Open E type players: Ry Cooder Derek Trucks Sonny Landreth This should give you plenty to listen to for now. Have one guitar set up for slide permanently. Use heavy strings, I like 12's with a wound 3rd string, and use high action. Stick with one tuning for now, whichever you choose. Choose one slide and stay with it. Learn your equipment, learn how it responds to your touch. Also practice your intonation, sliding and muting between very short phrases on like two strings, between 2 frets, back and forth. Do this ad nauseum until you can sound really smooth. It will probably take about 3 months. After that practice adding vibrato, this will take at least 6 months, probably considerably longer. With regular practice you should be able to play some really ass kickin slide on gigs in about one year. |

"When the Levee Breaks" is in Open G (although it sounds a whole step lower) and has fairly easy slide and non-slide parts, both chords and single-note leads.
+1 for "Little Red Rooster" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'". |
