Does "ASAT" stand for anything???

Just saw a blurb on the web that claimed it was attributed to Leo, who stated it was the best of "A Stratocaster And Telecaster."

Verifiable, or just WWW malarkey???

I always thought it stood for "Avoid Stella's Automatic Telekinesis"...

But a friend says it's "Another Super Awesome Tele".

I have never gotten a straight answer. Or if I did, I didn't know it...

From guitarsbyleo.com:

ASAT is a military abbreviation for "anti-satellite"; the name was suggested by author Richard Smith after he read an article about the Air Force's ASAT missile. Both Leo Fender and Dale Hyatt reportedly liked the image of a guitar shooting down things in space, and hence the name "stuck". The name is often (incorrectly) interpreted to mean "After Strat, After Telecaster".

Makes about as much sense as anything...

Well they could always named them after THESE.

This is a Northop "SNARK" missile
This was one of the first serious attempts at making an unmanned aircraft that would guide itself onto the designated target, the crude autopilot would guide the thing by means of navigating by homing in on a large bright star and using that to determine a straight level flight to the target zone. It worked well in simulated tests but in practice the forces of launching the thing threw the computer off balance and once airborne, the missile would fly too fast for the computer to even get a hold on the star it was supposed to guide itself on. As a result many of the missiles which were tested at Cape Canaveral landed in the sea soon after they were launched. Eventually when the plug on the project was pulled, so many Missiles were lost that the crews on Cape Canaveral joked that the waters were "SNARK infested"

It is, in fact, anti-satellite. Apparently Leo was fascinated by the concept. I guess there is some debate about whether or not it was also a reference to Leo's ongoing quest for more highs (altitude?).

I read it on the interwebs. It must be true.

Strictly a Southern usage:

"Ah'll Sell Another Telecaster"

Deah, bring me anothah Mint Julep, would you please?

Definitely nothing about Stratocasters. That makes no sense, especially given all the models Leo had his hand in in between the Strat design and this.

You learn something new every day

Interesting question and great answers. A couple of them might even be the right answer. I'm going with the Anti-Satellite version myself.

Now i'm trying to find out what it means when a woman says "Fine".

I believe Leo named it after the Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber, which went operational about the same time.

I had to go to the dictionary for the "Aerodyne" Strat, too.

I remember reading somewhere 20+ years ago (probably in an old Guitar Player Mag) that Leo did indeed name it after a missile.

Seems it would make sense, seeing that Leo liked to pick names that had something to do with the air/sky etc.
