Aerosmith Breakup?

So my buddy tweets today that Aerosmith have broken up after 40 years, yet I can find no evidence to confirm this.

Is there any truth to this IMHO long overdue end to what used to be the greatest rock band around?

(I say long overdue because you should always go out on top, and they were there 15 years ago and yes, YMMV).

Curiously yours,

Ward

I think it's time for all these 60s rocker bands to move on to something new, or lay back and enjoy the time and money they have left. I'm not saying stop playing music, and I'm not age discriminating, I'm older than most of them!

Vegas Sun

I don't know if its true or not - but it's the same undercover dot com and the same Paul Cashmere (who claimed Charlie Watts had quit the Stones) reporting on this one aswell.
so....lets hear it from the horse's mouth.

http://undercover.com.au/News-Story....After_40_Years

edit: looks like Las Vegas Sun reported it first.

Well it's probably too late to go out on top, but they can still go out for all I care. They are one of the most overrated rock bands ever IMO.

If they start running out of money they can do a little reunion tour.

I'm in the neighborhood and I think someone would have said something at the garage. I do know this; Steven got pretty banged up and though he's a sinewy outdoorsman I doubt if he'll be going in the water wearing waders anytime in the next 6 months. I still can't believe he's staying in The Mountains for Winter, he'd heal a lot quicker in the tropics. There's something about this place though - it's very hard to leave it.
I think if anything a well deserved sabbatical would be the smartest move.

Yeah they need to call it quits. Next time he falls off of a stage he might not bounce back so fast.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/20...ll-from-stage/

Sorry if I sound unsympathetic, but when I see guys in their 60s up on stage jumping around and what not, its just sad.

I don't want to see them break up, but the band is looking a little frightening on stage these days. I watched a concert video shot circa 2007, and I was shocked at their appearance. Some were bloated and hunched, all were rather decrepit looking, and not a la the Stones, where, if you squint, they still cut good figures on stage.

Break up rumor was going around weeks ago. Or was it months ago?

61 years old seems an odd time to start a solo career. I mean, how long does it take to get over the fans' "I'm seeing the Steven Tyler band when there's no good reason that I'm not seeing Aerosmith" hump?

What do I care? I don't really listen to them. I don't dislike 'em either. Nice tunes.

Shoot. If you're good at it, and it pays, the only reason to stop is to do something else you want to do more. I like their music, wouldn't pay to see them live, but enough people did, and enough still would. Sounds to me like they're set, and 61 is early retirement for normal folks.

Joe perry just finished a solo Cd. He said that MGMT/legal concerns and the lack of the band wanting to record a new Cd made him take his material and record solo.

In one sense, you're right, but there's not a lot of room for sabbaticals when you're a 61-year-old rocker. It's like a 41-year-old pro quarterback deciding to take a few years off from the NFL.

They've been done a long time. They couldn't get together and put out an album for almost 10 years. That compared with the frequent cancellations (they've canceled here 4 times in the past 7 years) has pretty much shot any fan loyalty they had to hell.

I grew up on Aerosmith and loved 'em, but enough is enough. I'm not surprised.

They had some good songs, a couple of them were great.
They helped rap music crossover into mainstream with Run DMC.
I can't judge anything. They made a living on playing music they loved.
They've capitalized on current trends before going out (RockBand, Guitar Hero).
Good job guys. Thanks for some awesome songs and Liv .

"They helped rap music crossover into mainstream with Run DMC."

I think it was more like Run DMC saved their sorry butts. They had next to nothing going at the time that video was made.

I always thought that they were another American band that wanted to be The Stones or The Yardbirds when they started. I can't say I like many of their songs. They aren't bad, I'd just rather listen to The Stones or The Yardbirds.

If the rumors are true, I'd tend to think Mr. Tyler hit his head a little too hard when he fell off that stage. I think it's kind of late for that solo career.

I ran into Steven Tyler in the Kmart on Maui about 10 years ago.

We were both following our wives around and ended up in the womens clothing department on the same rack. I really didn't notice it was him until we were standing next to each other.

He looked at me as said "So, is there a lounge in this place I can buy you a beer?" and he laughed.

We both laughed and talked for awhile while our wives shopped. His wife said "good, you've found a friend", which cracked up my wife.

QFT

And if I have to hear him squeal "DREAM OHWN!" one more time I am throwing my boom-box off the scaffold.

I kinda always thought Danzig was trying to be Jim Morrison too.

I saw Aerosmith in San Francisco last month - not a great fan but I have to say they were really, really good, great show to a small(ish) but appreciative crowd on Treasure Island - especially since Roger Daltrey was playing on the adjacent indoor stage - I had to keep running between the two!!

Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Stones, Ozzy, Townshend, Clapton, Levon Helm, John Fogerty, David Bowie, Robert Plant.
So who actually gets the TDPRI seal of approval and is allowed to continue their musical career even though they are over 60?

I'm not going to tell anyone they can't work any more, but my rule of thumb for "Who's past their sell-by date?" is whether they'd be able to sell any tickets for a show comprised entirely of material from the three most-recent albums.

You can either (still) do it, or you c'aint.

Long time 'legends' will afford a little wearing of the rose tinted spectacles from the populous, but there should be only so much reverence allowed.

Beck can still do it. Billy Gibbons can. Plant can, mainly in a slightly different direction.
Maybe The Stones... maybe.
The trick is not to rest on the glories of yesteryear, and turn it into a caberet.
Generally. And thats when it becomes fewer.
Perennial TDPRI Favourite - Bruce - will be in that list soon.
