What will the next "big" instrument be?
Me being the boring person I am was reading Wikipedia articles yesterday, and I saw that the saxophone was invented in 1841. While that was over 150 years ago, it doesn't really seem that long in the grand scheme of things. Now the sax is a pretty popular instrument. So my question is this: is there a newly invented instrument that may not be popular now, but will be mainstream in the future?

It will be No Instrument.
Everything has been repeatedly sampled at high resolution. Pesky musicians and their pesky salaries and royalties will soon no longer be necessary. Computers will be able to "assemble" anything the operators want.

That's not an instrument, that's a tool for assembling audio events.
An instrument is something you "play".

There will be no new instruments, except that the concept of 'instrument' will continue to evolve. Eventually, everything will be digital, and triggered by keys, finger/body movements or voice- though this could be a hundred years from now. The ultimate instrument will be a computer of some sort. Depressing, but inevitable.

How about a neural interface between the human brain and some kind of synthesizer technology so that any rhythm, melody, tone, or texture that we "hear" in our head can be instantly reproduced as sound?
We all have melodies and tunes running through our heads all the time. The difficulty is in turning that into notes on a guitar or audio tracks on a computer. Neural interface is the next big thing. |

I still don't that computers can add soul or emotion to the Midi that it may use. Having said that, it may just be a matter of time.

I'm just gonna go ahead and point out that when the first Moog synth hit the scene, many composers and classical musicians nearly rioted because they thought that "armatures" were going to start composing symphonies in their basements with the push of a button.
Here we are, with technology several orders of magnitude more advanced and not only were the alarmists 98% wrong, but we're still innovating in the fields of acoustic instrument building too.

So not true. A computer can do things a lot of instruments can't... it also can't do things a lot of instruments can. You can also use a MIDI controller (keyboard) to control the computer, it's what my friends and I do... and I wouldn't say it's depressing at all. I think once it's left up to the mind of the computer... that's when it will be a sad day.

If thats the case, then in a few years on a Banjo forum will be complaints of this new video game:
![]() ![]() If only they could have had the Slumdog kids do an ad for this, perhaps it would have been more successful... ![]()

Than that's not a new instrument, that's a keyboard synth. Synth's are forty years old, and pretty much tarted-up organs.

Like it or not, the computer is quickly becoming the most popular 'instrument'.
Why? For the same reason other instruments did. Ease of use. Why is clicking a mouse, or programming or editing a file any different than plinking notes on a keyboard?

Programming and editing are musical production/composition using musical tools, but the tools aren't instruments.

There have been musicians who have written hugely popular melodies on other instruments, who barely knew how to play them.

Vocoders shall come in their own as their use for real time modification of instrument sounds reaches mainstream popularity.
That or the Theremin.

The next big instrument will arrive shortly after, or shortly before the next big music ... like it always has.
Either way, I think I've got enough music, and instruments, thanks.
