Conway Twitty!

So, while watching an episode of Family Guy last nite, they had a break in the animation, and showed Conway doing "I see the want to in your eyes". I LOVE THAT SONG. I LOVE THAT KIND OF MUSIC. How would one classify/characterize that music/sound? Traditional country? Something else?
Gonna buy some Conway CD's tonite!!!
Scotty.

You could call Conway's stuff country, rock, whatever, depending upon what he was singing, and who was backing him up.

He started off playing more rock 'n roll, and ballads, and then went on to become huge in country music.

Here's my favorite Conway tune:

Classic commercial country,I'd think.Conway had another tune called "Boogiegrass Band" that had some marvelous compressed doubletracked-in-harmony lead guitar, sorta like "Eastbound and Down".
Anybody remember seeing him around 1970 on TV doing "Proud Mary" and playing a black Tele?

yep, macfarlane must be a fan, they've done the "ladies and gentlemen, conway twitty" bit a few times now.

i'd call it "good" music, but if i gotta make a classification, that song is classic country at it's finest.

Conway is the only reason Ronnie Hawkins ever came up here and Ronnie helped establish the Yonge Street strip ... which of course, evolved into a band nursery - The Band, Steppenwolf ...

The new preacher in town was going door to door, trying to recruit new members for his church. At the first house, an elderly lady opened the door, looked at the preacher, and exclaimed, "Oh, Conway Twitty!" The preacher said, "No, I hear that all the time, but I'm Preacher Jones, and I'd like to invite you to my new church this Sunday. Here's my card."
The next house, the man who answered the door said, "Hey, aren't you Conway Twitty?" to which the preacher gave the same answer as before.
At the next house, the door was answered by a beautiful young woman wearing nothing but a towel. When she saw the preacher, she squealed, "Oooohhh, Conway Twitty!!!"
The preacher said, "Hello, darlin'..."

Definitely pick yourself up some Conway. That's classic country.

I have a few LP's and CD's of his.
One of my favorite songs of his:

"You've Never Been This Far Before".

another favorite is his version of "Born To Lose"

good stuff.

He was a young rockabilly in his early days - went by his real name, Harold Jenkins. Go here and click the little speaker next to his name for a clip. You can tell its him but he sounds totally different.
Of course I grew up listening to all his country classics. He was one of my favorites.

Conway was great. While he was slicker then Merle or Waylon he was real. I got to see him and his black Telecaster in the Sierra foothills in the early '70's. He had some girl singer with him to sing the Loretta parts on duets. Was Lloyd Green his steel player back then?

But I guess it never held him back. Go figure.

Here's some useless information....I have lots.
Just dug it up off the internet.

"Jenkins felt that his real name wasn't marketable, and he changed his show business name in 1957. (Harold Jenkins remained his legal name.) Looking at a road map, he spotted Conway, Arkansas, and Twitty, Texas. Thus, he went with the professional name of Conway Twitty.[citation needed]

Alternatively, Jenkins met a Richmond, Virginia, man named W. Conway Twitty Jr. through Jenkins' manager in a New York City restaurant. The manager served in the army with the real Conway Twitty. Later, the manager suggested to Jenkins that he take the name as his stage name because it had a ring to it. The Richmond Conway Twitty subsequently recorded the song, "What's in a Name But Trouble," in the mid-1960s, lamenting the loss of his name to Jenkins.

There were also rumors he had lovers in Conway, Arkansas, as well as Twitty, Texas and his stage name was a constant reminder of their love."

And without Conway, the musical/movie "Bye Bye Birdie"(which had LOTS of early Fender custom color eye candy) might never have been made.

Although the show does it out of humor, I gotta say I do enjoy watching some of that stuff. The particular song you mentioned- I thought it was pretty good!

Being a somewhat aged git I remember when he burst on our hit parade with "Mona Lisa"
I always loved the guitar solo and have often wondered who played it, anyone know?

When I was in college one of my instructors was moonlighting as a DJ and said something like this to introduce a Twitty song, "Now let's hear one from my favorite singer Conroe Titty."

Other than that, during the 70s I was dragged as a kid to many Twitty concerts west of the Mississippe. I kind of got overloaded back then and its still too soon to try to listen.

Here he is with "Hello Darlin'" playing the black telecaster:

What kind of stuff did he use on his hair?

I like the thinline he's got in this duet with Loretta:

Some tasty steel going on there.

Here's a shot of Conway.......

back in his "rockin" years before "Hello Darlin" and all those taken in 1960. That's my old friend Al Bruno on lead guitar. Al still uses that same old '345 Gibson.........JH in Va.

One of my favorite Conway Twitty songs is There's A Honky Tonk Angel. Great classic country ballad with cool Rhodes piano:

He had some duds too... Redneckin' Love Makin' Night was embarrassingly bad.

I stand corrected, Bill. (Who'd Lloyd Green play for?). I played with a PSG player who turned me on to all of those Nashville guys from around 1970 and sometimes I get 'em mixed up. Sad to hear of John's passing.
