Perhaps you should put down that cork you're sniffing & check out "Live at Darryl's House"...

FWIW Dave Stewart from Eurythmics did rip up (see Would I lie to you solo)... & HE's the guy married to Siobahn from Banananananaramamama

How about Neil Finn of Split Enz and Crowded House? I love both of those bands. I think Finn is just a superb musician in all of his projects: a great singer, writer, and multi-instrumentalist. His solo stuff and discs with his brother Tim are also cool.

Please tell us why your assessment is more valid than the views of those who like Hall and Oates. You say they are "just below mediocre at best," but others say they are great. So who's right?
Just say that you don't like them. No-one can argue with that.

What about Lita Ford?

She was/is a pretty good guitarist, but probably better known as a leather clad female rocker in the 80's.

Careless Whisper was co-written by Andrew Ridgeley [Unlike all the Wham! singles (except "Wham Rap!")].

At least that was how it was credited (according to wiki the two had written it together as unknowns three years earlier, when Michael was working as a cinema usher in Watford, England) ... although I have heard that Michael wrote it, and perhaps because of a lack of Wham! credits - credit was 'gifted'.

It was released as a George Michael solo single in some parts (the U.K.?), so that might've played into the pyschology of such a gifting, if it did occur.

I think it's one of Michael's best songs, save for the "guilty feet have got no rhythm line." It was also a very revealing song for someone such as Michael, who was living as a closeted gay man at the time.

Not sure if the next two would count, but I'm throwing them in there..

East Bay Ray (Raymond Pepperell) - Dead Kennedys
Lyle Preslar - Minor Threat

I knew, as much as one can know without... you know. One listen to lyrics of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (sample: "You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day") and a brief glance at the video, and it was obvious to me. But he insisted he was straight. In 1987, he famously dated makeup artist Kathy Jeung, who starred in the music video for his song "I Want Your Sex." Recently, I was told that it's common for gay men struggling with their orientation to date Asian women. Go figure.

I put the word thinks in my post. Just an opinion, or are we not allowed those anymore. Not attempting to piss anyone off, and perhaps the wording was harsh, but placed beside any truly gifted singers, IMHO these guys just do not hold up. Again, just an opinion. Give me Otis, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Smokie, Sam n Dave, Eric Burdon, Van Morrison, The Beatles, hell I think The Monkees were more talented. Sorry to rouse and rile, just my humble sans cork sniffin opinion.

I think Nik Kershaw fits in this thread well.

Not only an amazing, underrated singer and songwriter, but also a multi-instrumentalist.

Bob Dylan being mentioned in the same sentence with MILES DAVIS is something I was not looking forward to happen in my life.

Wasnt this a thread to highlight 'guitarists' who are not immediately thought of as ... well .. guitarists/players?
Theres some mentioned above who are clearly revered as guitarists/players by legions of guitar enthusiasts at least!

But, I cant think of any 80's offerings for 'not recognised for being a guitar player, but may have been one really' that has not already been mentioned.

Did one of the guys from 'Milli Vanilli' ever pretend to be a guitarist? ;)

Ooh hang on what about Nick Heyward (Haircut 100)
I seem to recall he could whack out a fair chunk of funk when called upon.

Edit - found a YouTube - may have been some other dude in the band ..

I don't know whichever of 'em was, the other guitarist's name is Graham Jones by the way, but you can hear some unbeliveable rythm guitar on their first album Pelican West. I listen to that record a few times every year since it came out and it never ceases to amaze me. Both of them played Gretsch Country Gentlemen if memory serves.

Search up articles on Wham!'s "Make it big" world tour and you'll find a LOT of stories about Andrew Ridgeley shagging every girl in sight, and as I said before, he's now married one of the singers of Banarama, there's NOTHING gay about him.

As for George Michael, now that everybody knows he's gay, everybody is going "Oh it was obvious.", "I knew right away.", "The whole band is gay"

What would you have said if George Michael never came out? Answer: nothing at all, because there wasn't any proof.

Blazer, I'm old enough to remember when Wham came out... "young guns havin' some fun, pretty ladies keep 'em on the run" or something like that. George didn't have to come out to prove anything to me. He didn't have to hide anything from me either. I grew up in a city where gay was quite common. Wham was very popular there too. Most of the world also figured out that Boy George and the Village People were gay... it's no big deal. There is nothing wrong with it - let other people be what they want to be.

Not to mention KD Lang in her country punk days.

I think Billy Squier's guitar prowess was grossly overlooked, had he been a sideman I'd bet his status as a guitar slinger would have been a little different.

Here's a few more that don't get enough credit IMO, these guys are as good as it gets...

Elliot Easton
Neil Giraldo
Dan Baird
Warner Hodges (already mentioned)
Johnny Marr (already mentioned)

Neil is a fantastic player. Mark Hart from Crowded House is a tremendous musician as well whether he's on guitar or keyboards.
