Memorial Day around the globe

So...I just saw a post by Scotland talking about Monday 5/31 being a holiday and firing up the grill. I'm assuming that most of the world observes a memorial day of sorts, for the veterans of WWII. I was just wondering when you observe it (if you're not in the U.S.) and what some of your traditions are.

We always have a cook-out, where we grill or smoke some sort of beef (I am from Tejas

). And my 79 year old grandfather, who served in the US Navy during WWII reminds us of a few things to be thankful for. He usually gets emotional.

But we have a great time together with family - almost like a summer-time Thanksgiving.

Monday 31st is just one of our normal national holidays over here, a bank holiday.
We have a different date for remembering our war veterans.
My grandather served on British destroyers during WW2, he died before I was born (survived the whole war, 1939-1945 and died of cancer, no way for a hero to go) so I try to do my bit as a gesture to him

Commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915 - keep in mind that for us, WWI started in 1914.

The attack was ill-planned and ultimately unsuccessful, however it is regarded as a military coming of age for the two countries which are members of the British Commonwealth.

There is a dawn service in towns and cities across Australia, and marches in the capital cities in which veterans of all wars participate - WWII, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam and the Gulf War being the main ones. I don't think that any veterans from WWI are still alive.

May 31 is a religious holiday here in The Netherlands. May 4 & 5 are memorial days.

Actually, I think the US Memorial Day was first created to morn the dead during the Civil War. It now is celebrated to honor the fallen in all wars, but because it was initially a Civil War rememberance this day is not celebrated all over the world.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states.

The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act, P.L. 90 - 363, in 1971 to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
