Florida TDPRI-ers. Route advice needed

Hey Floridians! I need some route advice.

We've left out annual Florida vacation arrangements late this year, but still got a great deal on flights, and we're arriving in Orlando Sanford on the last Friday in July. :D

This year we've rented a home in Cape Coral and I'm looking at the drive from Sanford to the Gulf Coast. Mapquest says I4 - I75 (journey 226.63-miles), but I used the I4 last year and it was continual roadworks and construction works. A real pain!

Looking at the map I'm considering cutting off the corner and taking SR17 south at Lakeland which joins the I75 at Pinta Gorda, just south of Port Charlotte.

Good idea or not? :? FYI, we arrive at Sanford at 17.15 so should hit the I4 at around (rush hour!) 18.30 to 18.45 - the Immigration people at Sanford are much friendlier than those at Orlando International or Miami.

What's the I4 like at the moment between Orlando to Tampa?

I'm hoping to get to the house in Cape Coral at around 10.30pm, with a stop of for emergency supplies - beer , wine, milk and coffee - a quick dip in the pool with the kids and a late night delivered pizza.

Any advice welcome. I4 - I75 or cross country?

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Cape Coral

Hi Peter,

Never been to Cape Coral, but I live in Sanford. I-4 sucks to the Tampa area (my parents live in Clearwater so I've made the trip a time or two). As bad as it is, it will probably be quicker to I-75 and on down to Cape Coral.

I hope you have a great time. If you've got some time, let me know. Maybe we can have lunch (or breakfast, dinner, whatever) before you head southwest.

Good luck,

Ricko

Thanks Richard

Seems like the I4 has been a mess for years. Guess we'll just have to be patient.

May have time to get together on the return journey.

Thanks and best regards

Peter
